If this is so I hope they resolved the money issues. I would hate to see another thief haul away financial resources from the organization.

Pretty sure by releasing him he owes nothing. They can't even collect the fines from ota's since that comes from his base salary

cap implications per Schefter

I read that he doesn't have to pay anything back since the cowboys released him.

Honestly I don't care about the money. I'm tired of having losers on the roster who don't want to be here. They're a detriment to the team.

Cowboys release Orton

Cowboys release Orton

Cowboys finally release Kyle Orton

Posted by Darin Gantt on July 15, 2014, 5:31 PM EDT

The Cowboys apparently saw enough of Brandon Weeden to make them willing to eat the money.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Cowboys have informed veteran quarterback Kyle Orton he will be released.

The Cowboys held out hope the veteran backup would return, and that he might retire (at which point he’d owe them $3 million in signing bonus). But when he skipped veteran minicamp (incurring $70,000 worth of fines) it was clear he wasn’t bluffing.

Now, they’ll roll with Weeden behind Tony Romo, who is coming off back surgery.

In the offseason, the Buccaneers signed more than a half-dozen veterans expected to play regular roles in 2014. Considering the franchise had hired a new coach (Lovie Smith) and G.M. (Jason Licht) after a 4-12 campaign in 2013, changes were to be expected.

However, beneath it all, there was a rather logical reason why the Bucs were aggressive in free agency, as Smith told the Buccaneers’ website in a story published Tuesday.

“We had five draft picks – five – so we had to look around,” Lovie Smith said, according to Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com. “We weren’t going to be able to bring in an awful lot in the draft, numbers-wise. Right after our evaluation process, we determined exactly what we needed. And then we looked at the available free agents and thought there were going to be a lot of opportunities to help ourselves. And that’s what happened.”

Offensive tackle Anthony Collins, center Evan Dietrich-Smith, defensive end Michael Johnson, quarterback Josh McCown, tight end Brandon Myers and cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Alterraun Verner all joined Tampa Bay in free agency, and the talent infusion surely helps the Buccaneers’ roster. But it’s not cheap to sign experienced talent, and the Bucs, like every other club, need to annually stock the roster with young contributors. The Buccaneers did add six drafted rookies in 2014, but in the process, they dealt away a 2015 fifth-round selection to move up for rookie offensive tackle Kevin Pamphile on the final day of the draft.

This is a stupid move if he doesn't have to pay back the signing bonus. Why not just wait and force him to retire? More egg on Jerry's face.

Pretty much how I feel as well.

The guy didn't want to be here, no sense on keeping him around. Piss on him.

Hate that Jones got bent over again, but we should be used to it. Ratliff, Austin and now Orton have basically robbed him blind.

I don't really care about the money because it's more out of Jerry's pocket, but it strengthens a precedent already created that players can almost do as they please and Jerry will just take it.

I actually appreciate more what's being torn down. So, I guess I really should be happy any time Jerry gets his ass reamed.

Absolutely.
I wouldn't worry about the playing for a rival thing. At least a division rival.

The Cowboys thought more highly of Orton than the rest of the league IMO.
