Cowboys heat up hamstrings

June, 23, 2014

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Hamstring injuries were a common theme for the Cowboys in 2013. At least 12 players had some sort of hamstring problem.

During offseason workouts this spring and summer, some position players were wearing tights to keep their legs warm and in some cases using heat spray on their legs.

At one practice last week, wide receiver Dez Bryant had both legs sprayed.

A team official said some players need extra maintenance.

"We really haven't been talking about it amongst each other, about, oh, how are we going to tape our hamstrings," Bryant said. "I think everybody knows how important it is to keep your body right. And I think that's exactly what all of us have been doing. We've been making sure everything is good."

Dwayne Harris and Bryant wore tights under their shorts during practices at Valley Ranch last week despite the warm temperatures.

The Cowboys are doing extra stretching, bringing in parallel bars to help players with their flexibility and monitoring the amount of running being done.

Bryant has never been a player the team has had to worry about in terms of being in shape.

"I'm going to continue to keep doing what I'm doing," he said. "It's important to me to be in the best shape I possibly can be. And make sure the rest of my teammates, they are in shape too as well, especially the wide receivers. I'm really not trying to go into camp taking a step back. We're trying to build not only me but help the rest of the guys build off what we learned from OTAs, minicamp and go from there."

12 players is almost a 1/4 of the active roster.

I think it was simply players showing up to camp out of shape.

This seemed like a good idea at the time.

Booze touched on this earlier this season...the Cowboys seem to be stuck on keeping old school (and older) trainers, while other teams have plucked trainers out of the college ranks.

Its not a coincidence this team has huge problem with pulled hamstrings and muscles...too much new tech out there I believe that isn't being used by the cowboys staff.

CONTINUITY!!!!!

We need to change something. I'm sure we surpassed every team in the leage in pulled hamstrings by a mile.

Woicek coming in has actually made things worse and Jim Maur has been around since the early 90s.

The 12 players were last year's numbers. Let's see what this year will bring.

I don't hold a lot of stock in that. If so, why weren't we having these problems 20 years ago with these same trainers? The players were basically the same size and speed then, so it can't be blamed on them getting bigger and faster.

IIRC 3 or 4 players went down on the first day with hamstring pulls.

20 years ago, you could work the bitches all year long, all offseason long. Now with the new CBA, the access is limited and you have about as much access to the players as they do in the college ranks, which isn't a lot. If you listen to long timers from NFL front offices, they are frustrated by the lack of contact they are allowed.

It is not a coincidence things changed when Unfrozen Caveman Strength Coach returned. It was right with the new CBA. New England let him go (replaced with a younger guy, also from the college ranks) and he came right back to Dallas because Juraszek had a lot of issues and basically had to take a medical leave.

The two most healthy teams last year...Philly and the Jets. Both with younger more innovative strength coaches who weren't doing their best work 20-25 years ago with a bunch of self starting madmen like Woicik enjoyed in both Dallas and New England.

It's time for new blood.

Sad but true. Bill Billichick really knows what he's doing.
He knew what he was doing by letting him leave.

Like Booze said, there were a bunch of self starters in New England. Here that's not really the case.

I don't think our players hydrate enough. With the popularity of energy drinks/potions and the various supplements that are all the rage now, they all have one thing in common...they dehydrate you.

However much water they are drinking, they should double it. GG.
