Bottom line is we have to have a backup QB. What is your preferred resource to get one? Round 1-3 drafted QB is not an option.

High priced starting-caliber like Kyle Orton/Kitna, cheap veteran like Weeden/David Carr, drafted QB Round 4-7 like Stephen McGee, undrafted free agent like Clint Stoerner

Not a fact

Even if the Pats end up not getting a pick back for Mallett they still have had a cheap backup.
...one who can't play. Not the best move move for a team that is playoff-ready.

Better to have used that 3rd round pick on a guy who can actually start. We took Demarco Murray a few picks ahead of Mallett, and the team totally depends on him.

The Pats and Belichick obviously hate Mallett a lot less than you do. You may think he can't play, but they think he can.

I think you have to give them credit for how they've developed QBs for their system. Brady was almost a draft afterthought and they turned him into an all-timer. They took Cassell and made wine out of water, trading him for a high pick after a "breakout" season. Plus, at least they give the position due diligence despite having Brady. They've drafted a QB in round three or higher in three of the last seven drafts and even if those picks don't pan out, in general you're more likely to find a suitable replacement or at least a quality backup than in the later rounds or via UDFA. There are always exceptions to the rule on both ends, high picks that bust and late rounders that come out of nowhere. Your odds are still better in the early rounds.

I'll just have to disagree with you.

He isn't a suitable developmental player because they drafted Garoppolo in the 2nd round.

He wasn't a suitable backup while he was there because he couldn't have carried them deep into the playoffs. It would have been like a 3rd round rookie taking over when Aikman went down in 1991 instead of Steve Buerlein.

He burned a 3rd round pick that never contributed to the team nor netted any value in trade.

That's 0 for three reasons to take a player, I'm afraid.

If they didn't think he was any good they wouldn't have kept him as the top backup. Belichick cuts people that he thinks can't play.

Garoppolo has nothing to do with it because Mallett wasn't going to sign an extension to not play for 4 more years waiting for Brady to retire. I've said this like four times and you are clearly too thick to understand that if someone is about to hit free agency and is unlikely to return, you plan to replace them.

You can say you feel like he wasn't a suitable backup, but Belichick hasn't said that with his words or his actions.

Personally, I draft one in the 6th round this year and hope it works out like Brady/Bledsoe did in New England. But that is RARE....

So I like the flyer on Weeden. It's a lot like being a 6-7 round pick. Actually better since you didn't have to spend a pick and aren't paying him much at all.

Well, we didn't draft one this year, so what do you do?
I start with next year and spend a 2-4 round pick, depending on if anyone falls. You have Romo for this year and next because of his contract.

BUT, I do not restructure Romo again. If Weeden or the draft pick from next year don't pan out, then you have to go with a 1-2 rounder in the 2016 draft. Weeden even if he can play isn't a long term answer.

If Romo plays in 2016 you have a high pick you hope is your long term answer learning behind him for a year.

I'm also looking for guards and DL in those two drafts. I don't want to have my OL at least finished. No since in putting your young franshise QB behind the link Troy started with.

I'm actually really curious to take a look at Mallett. If he hits free agency after this year I'd be pretty tempted to sign him depending on what he'd be willing to take.

I didn't care for him much when he was at Arkansas. I haven't seen him at all as a pro. I know he was physically a desirable choice but his play at Arkansas was never consistent.

I actually really liked him at Arkansas and was a top highschooler when he arrived at Michigan. My only real concern is that every QB who plays for Petrino seems to look good. He is an offensive guru.

I'd do it just to see Ravid fly into a blind rage.

:lol

I wouldn't mind signing Mallet for a low contract now that New England's prepared him for us.

The real solution is to use a 1st/2nd round pick in 2015 or 2016 depending on Romo's health.
