We like J.J. We like Church. We like Heath. We will see how these guys play out,” Jones said. “We got a little on the come in Jakar Hamilton, and we’ll see what Matt Johnson does.
Take this information for what it's worth, but one of the guys on the Ticket yesterday was saying that despite Wilcox's comments to the contrary, his mother's death took a larger and more significant toll on his season than he was letting on.

I wouldn't call myself optimistic that Wilcox will take over as starter and make us forget about upgrading the position but he was a 3rd rounder and flashed a few times last year so I am curious as to what he can do.

The guy went into a shell. Hopefully, he's been able to come to terms with his grief and move on.

And that's why it's retarded when people talk about him being unable to beat out Heath, or that the team likes Heath better.

Please, we have no idea if it had thus long lasting effect on him as a player. This could easily be the team making excuses for a poor player. Considering their history of this, that's the way I'm leaning.

Just like we have no idea that it didn't. The guy showed flashes, then completely went in the tank after his mother died. You don't have to listen to a word anybody is saying. You could see it for yourself.

He might turn in to a serviceable player. He might not. That's all I'm saying. But it's the fashionable thing to always think the worst. Don't fall over while you're leaning.

His mother died during training camp. There were no flashes to be shown other than in shorts. In pre-season and real games, I saw very little from him to give me any hope.

Now sure, it's possible to grieve a loss for 6 months but to the point where it affects your play in a game that long? I'm not buying it. Usually something like a game is what will take your mind off of it temporarily so that you can cope.

Hard to know how much the emotional pain factored into his on-field performance. The biggest factor had to be that he played safety for one year in college and then had to hit the ground running in the NFL. He's all projection, IMO. If they're right and he's capable of making the transition to the NFL and be a starter then it will be a big bonus. I get that they want to give him time but if he still looks shaky after this season they have to upgrade. Even just from what Wilcox showed last year he looks like he should at least be rosterable as a backup safety/special teams specialist for the next few years. I'll be surprised if he shows enough to grab the starting role by the balls though.

I lost my mom 14 years ago and it still pains me at times. I can totally understand it affecting him for the season. I still dont really celebrate Mothers Day so its easy for me to see how that could affect him. Hopefully you have several years before you have to go through that.

Yep. Every person grieves differently. Pretty ignorant to think you might know how it affects another person. Sorry for your loss, Rev.
