Jerry Jones glad Michael Sam drafted, even though he didn't fit a position with the Cowboys

The Cowboys considered Michael Sam a “tweener” who didn’t quite fit either as an outside linebacker or a defensive end for them, but owner Jerry Jones said he is glad the openly gay player was drafted.

“I was happy for him, and I was happy to see him drafted,” Jones said. “I don’t know what that means, but I was happy to see him drafted because it just shouldn’t be an issue. It shouldn’t be an issue that we made of that.”

Jones said he didn’t think Sam would be drafted so late, but that even if he hadn’t been, he would have shown competitiveness as an undrafted free agent.

“I know he has that kind of competitiveness, and I’m sure he has that kind of spirit,” Jones said. “I’m sure he would have gone in there and just showed everybody that he was capable of being a player in the NFL just like the other people that aren’t drafted would get on these teams and show that they’re part of the NFL. That would have been a great story as well.”

Cowboys had a deal to move back into third round for another lineman, Stephen Jones says

Stephen Jones said the Cowboys were prepared to trade back into the third round for an offensive lineman, but that their target was taken a few picks before they were ready.

“We had a neat little deal set up,” he said. “It was going to be a nice pick for us, too, if it would have worked out. It’s probably not fair to share, but it was something that was real close.”

Jones said the Cowboys would have traded a future pick, not a 2013 pick.

Five linemen went in the last 12 picks of the third round. They were guard Chris Watt to the Chargers, guard Trai Turner to the Panthers, guard Brandon Linder to the Jaguars, tackle Michael Schofield to the Broncos and tackle Brandon Thomas to the 49ers.

“We got the rug pulled out from us about two picks away at the bottom of the third,” Jones said.

It had to have been Michael Schofield (T Michigan) at pick 95, the second to last pick before the compensatory picks.

Ehhhh. Plus we probably would have traded a 2015 #2.

It was probably for Turner. No need to give up a future pick for him.
Yeah. Dodged a bullet there.

I get the idea to shore up the OL, but that would have been stupid.

Cowboys didn't take a safety high; Stephen Jones says he's 'pretty comfortable' with what they have

The Cowboys did not take a safety high in the draft, although they liked Jimmie Ward of Northern Illinois, who went late in the first round.

“After that, we felt like we were getting a lot of what we had,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said.

“We like J.J. We like Church. We like Heath. We will see how these guys play out,” Jones said. “We got a little on the come in Jakar Hamilton, and we’ll see what Matt Johnson does.

“We mixed in a few guys with them tonight, and let them go out there and compete. I feel pretty comfortable there. More comfortable than people from the outside looking in.”

:lol

The draft was all but over. Definitely sounds like he might have fired up his emergency doob to take his mind off of not being drafted. Then, oh shit, that's the phone! Garrett almost seemed to know it. His reaction after he passed off the phone was uncharacteristically human.

Texas' 2010 draft class was ranked in the top 5 by Rivals and ESPN and not a single player drafted. :lol

Hook 'em Horns!
Also shows you that the rating systems in college and pros are not the gospel yet everyone uses them as though they are the final verdict as to who is worthy.

Just looking over other teams' drafts and noticed the Buccaneers drafted no defensive players. Don't think I have ever seen that before.

CowboysZone is a Dallas Cowboys football forum and not a forum or platform for discussing, ranting or raving about your support or displeasure at the drafting of the first openly gay NFL player, Michael Sam, by the St. Louis Rams.

No matter your viewpoint on this, it does not belong here! This is going to be a huge news story on just about every news site as well as countless twitter and blog pages, so feel free to go to those sites and rant or rave as much as you want.

Wait.....so you're not even allowed to discuss the impact of a historic moment in NFL history? I can't believe people allow themselves to be censored by these ass clowns.

I'd tell Reality to go F himself.

And didn't Minny draft nearly all defense?
