42 yards is fine.

Don't like it. Stop fixing shit that isn't broken.

Even though an extra point is rarely missed, it is something that is remembered. Especially if it affects the outcome of a game. The Saints were eliminated from the playoff race because of a missed extra point against Jacksonville. It's rare, but people remember stuff like that.

I agree with the camp that says we shouldn't fix what isn't broken.

I think the EP is the most boring play in football. I like the idea of making it something that has some apprehension.

Well, the Broncos get another boost to their home field advantage. They get 8 games to kick these longer XP's in rarefied air.

This sounds like a good idea until you need a 53 yard kick to win the game and your kicker's leg is shot from kicking EP's all day.
I hardly think their leg is shot after kicking less than a dozen times.

How about just making the FG posts more narrow?

...and while we're at it, how about taller by 2 feet?

This is the solution I favor, though 42 yards seems a tad long.

I think it's dumb. You should want the kicking game de-emphasized in football. If my team drives 100 yards to score a would-be game tying TD, why would we want the game to be decided on a kicker?

Kicking is so foreign to threat if the game of football. It's like having a soccer game end with free throws.

You want games decided on real football plays for defensive stops, goal line stands or scoring TDs, not because a kicker missed two XPs.

Just eliminate the XP. You get the free point for 7 if you go straight to kickoff.
Well, teams would have a decent incentive to go for two, which is a "football" play.

Maybe this is traditionalist, but I still like having football based around "7" points. If 2 pointers became the norm, scores of 6 and 8 is weird.

I'm not against 2pointers as the norm and eliminating the xp, but not my favorite option.

Fricking with the game that isn't broken.

Before, it was all in the name of safety.

Now it's about establishing some BS legacy as some sort of a "pioneer".

I don't see the need to change the XP. This seems like a case of someone trying to fix something that's not broken.

Who's actually complaining about the XP being a detriment to the game? Why is this such a big issue?

I am not sure it is being viewed as a "fix" rather a change that could make the game more interesting. It's not like the game hasn't has some changes from time to time over the years.

Salary Cap being the biggest.

Granted, not a change to the game itself, but it altered the league like nothing has done before.

The salary cap coupled with parity affected the dynasty aspect of the sport considerably but as you said they didn't affect the game. The rules of the game have usually been enacted to protect players over the past few years but the most significant rule in my opinion that affected the game is the overtime rules. The game really hasn't changed much and redefining the e.p. doesn't change the game it just adds another element to a particular play.

I think rule changes on pass interference and illegal contact have changed the game more than anything else that's happened since 1979.
