Obviously we don't have any great individual rushers, but I think part of it is that Eberflus has them being kind of cautious off the ball, especially with QBs who can run. Which these days seems like most of the league.

Some coaches like Quinn have you play the run on the way to the QB. Eberflus is the opposite. When asked about his philosophy, he says it's, "Stop the run and take the ball away." A lot of coaches start with pressuring and hitting the quarterback.

So, question for the board... When we start bringing up some guys, who do you let go off the current roster? We seem to have a problem with a bunch of mid players that the front office for one reason or another has an attachment to. Like Tolbert, Or Mingo.

Another example, Broaddus (I hate myself for listening to him but I do it sometimes) says Clowney is doing nothing and he'd be the 53rd man on his roster. But I seriously doubt they'd let him go because he's a former big name, they just signed him, he's "still getting into game shape," etc.

I don't think it matters much. We're not a good team which means I'd favor releasing older players instead of younger, but even then most of these younger players who are potential candidates for release aren't particularly good anyway.

So like Mingo vs Brooks vs Cropper or whatever, I don't think it will make much difference.

Here is how you know no one is buying into the scheme. These guys aren't even really being blocked out of their lanes. They are all just free lancing chasing things with zero gap integrity. Dumbass Sam is out there probably thinking he is maintaining his gap. The LBers are so out of position it's crazy.

Yea, the talent isn't this bad. It's not great but it's not the worst in the league by orders of magnitude.

Could the Cowboys trade Pickens to a SB contender and work out a side deal where he re-signs with them in the offseason?

I have a hard time seeing Dallas do that in-season, because it isn’t the Cowboys’ way. But I’ll play the game here. If the team is out of the race, and if the brass has decided it isn’t going to pay Pickens, then that should be considered. And Pickens has certainly emerged as a big-time weapon for Dallas, fulfilling the potential he’s had since he was a teenager, with CeeDee Lamb banged up. He has 32 catches for 525 yards and six touchdowns through six games, which projects to 91 catches, 1,488 yards and 17 touchdowns for the season.

He’s set himself up for a massive payday. Tagging Pickens in 2026 will cost close to $30 million, but that might be palatable given that the top of the market at the position has now surpassed $40 million. Would the Cowboys be willing to pay that sort of lump sum while carrying Lamb’s big contract? Would they be willing to extend Pickens and have two such deals on the books? Are they convinced the issues the Steelers had are past Pickens now?

These are the questions you have to ask, if you’re Dallas. Because the other thing that Pickens has played his way into is real trade value.

I'd tag him the next 2 years unless we can get a first out of trading him.

It is an interesting question, would a contender be willing to give up more than the third you gave up? For a guy on an expiring contract that's likely to net a third round comp pick in 2027. That's the only way you could consider making that type of deal.

Yeah, given his agent, I can't imagine they don't want to wait until the offseason and go to the highest bidder. And nobody is giving you a decent draft pick for a third of a season or whatever.

I mean we have seen some pretty aggressive in season moves by contenders. But it's usually with the knowledge that if they lose the player they know they have a great comp pick coming back. Think the Christian McCaffery trade for example. I feel like in Brian Burns contract year the Panthers were offered a first plus more. But they ultimately passed.

So I don't know that it's true that a deal can't be done. I'm still not sure I'd want to make a deal because I love Pickens and love what he would do with Lamb. I don't want to panic trade elite talent on offense just because our defense blows. I think a new defensive coordinator could rebuild the defense rather quickly in an offseason.

Rosie and PT traded a third rounder for Pickens. Losing him to free agency makes them look dumb.

I kind of would pay him whatever. They have plenty of money. What else are they going to spend it on?

If someone gave us a first for him I'd probably take it, especially with Flournoy emerging, but beyond that I think having Pickens makes our offense really hard to deal with.

The way I look at it is, we have 3 picks in the first 2 rounds in each of the next two drafts. That means we can infuse the defense with a lot of talent relatively cheaply and by the time those guys need to be paid Pickens will be off the books.

And we're not going to spend on outside free agents anyway so it's not like paying Pickens will stop us from signing immediate veteran help on defense. We weren't going to anyway.

Yep. We only need one person on offense if Pickens goes to make the unit elite. That is Chuma. Go get him and its all you need.

Then you can draft all defense because we know they aren't spending in FA.
