Coaches should have high expectations. If you lose anywhere you are not long for an NFL coaching job.

The only thing of note the man has done is let Manning carry a team that was already built for him to the superbowl. Without Manning Caldwell was a 2 win coach. Hires like this are why I will never understand the NFL coach hiring process. There are so many better options out there. You'd be better off dipping into the college ranks for a number of head coaches there.

Even if you liked Caldwell, there's no reason to hire him now and now wait until these guys in the playoffs are done. It's not like he was going anywhere.

Clark Shaughnessy basically bounced from OC to DC even though those titles didn't formally exist back in the 40s for the Bears. (He invented the modern T formation and installed it then George Halas put him in charge of figuring out how to stop it since other teams would use it).

Tom Landry was a DC for the Giants but served as his own OC with the Cowboys when he was head coach before eventually giving the job to Dan Reeves. A similar situation existed with other former DCs as head coaches choosing to be their own OCs, including Bum Phillips.

I can't think of anyone who had both jobs in modern football without the above "HC coordinating his own offense" scenario.

According to ESPN's Ed Werder, Eagles QBs coach Bill Lazor is expected to be named the Lions' new offensive coordinator.

Lazor has drawn plaudits for his work with Nick Foles, but has never coordinated an NFL offense. Before joining Chip Kelly's staff, he spent three seasons as the Virginia Cavaliers' offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. He was a Redskins assistant from 2004-07, and served as the Seahawks' QBs coach in 2008-09. In Detroit, Lazor's main task would be sharpening Matthew Stafford's shoddy mechanics. Stafford has thus far been unwilling to clean up his sloppy game.

So Stafford is going to have a QB coach, an OC with history of grooming QBs and a HC with history of grooming Peyton Manning and Joe Flacco.

If they can't knock the retard out of him, nobody will.
