To a point it is draft for need, but it is not like taking him at 18 is a reach at all.
I think at this point he's probably not a reach. Most important is that we don't skip a better player to take Fluker. Better to draft the better player and then sign Clabo or Winston.

You told me before though that Winston and Clabo would be super expensive and stuff after the draft.

It's random. If after the draft the same needs exist but these two are the only solution then the cost remains the same or even goes up if there's a TC or minicamp injury. If there's only a couple of teams who need OT's or just one then they may have to lower their asking price.

In any case the price Dallas pays for Free turning into a bust should be spent in free agency, not the draft.

The only exception would be if a higher ranked player from their board was an OT and still available like in 2010 when Bulaga fell. Cowboys had him ranked 13 overall and he went 23rd. Dallas traded up from 24 to get Bryant who they had ranked 11th or 12th, but they could just as easily have been trying to get Bulaga. I like that they stuck with taking the most talented player.

I am not dead set on any player to be honest. Last year I really wanted DeCastro, but this year it is different. I would love get Warmack or Cooper, but that does not seem like it will happen this year. I know I don't want Vaccaro, but outside of that I would not be too upset with any player.

Is Cooper as good as he's been hyped and is Vaccaro as bad as we think?

Looking at some game video I like almost everything I've seen about Cooper. I could nitpick at his measurables but the guy looks like a stud. As for Vaccaro UT in general scares the crap out of me as does a knee-jerk reaction to drafting a safety just because Kiffen's defenses have always had one.

But the Cowboys may see things differently. Cooper is not as good as Warmack and Vaccaro is probably not as bad as I'm fearing, so I have a feeling those two are closer on the Cowboys board than we'd like to believe.

I don't think Vacarro is bad at all. I think there's just such a negative stigma around DBs and with all the resources we poored into the secondary last offseason nobody wants to use such a valuable pick.

But at the same time, nobody can deny that S isn't still a huge need. There are many scenarios that if they played out, a Vacarro pick would be fine by me. I won't pass on a talented player just because of the position he plays.

I just don't see Vaccaro as a difference maker S. If I take one that early I want a guy who can influence the game from the back end some...I don't get that he is a playmaker back there.

Vaccaro isn't that bad, he's worth a mid 1st round pick.

My thing is that I can't really see a situation where our hand is forced in terms of taking Vaccaro, worst case scenario a guy like Fluker or Sylvester Williams is there at 18 and I'd prefer both of them to Vaccaro as they are both generally rated in the same area.

I also think we can get a safety in the 2nd who wouldn't be that much worse than Vaccaro as a prospect.

I liked Barron last year...he had the feel of a play maker.

My argument there was that Fluker just is not a stud. Fluker types are easier to find than guys like Austin.
That's true for everyone else but let's not forget who's running this team. If Jerry was capable of finding a decent OL in later rounds he would surely have one by now.

We need talent early. Early enough that it's hard even for our moron GM to screw it up. Having another stud WR would be great. What would be even greater is having an offensive line even moderately capable of providing run lanes and giving Romo more than two seconds to get rid of the ball.

I'd take Fluker or Williams. But if not I'd be ok with a guy like Austin or Hunter at 18 as well. A Speed guy opposite Dez would allow Miles to play more in the slot when he's healthy. Although, 2 Austins at WR could get confusing!

I'm not going to poo poo Hunter, but he is not the type of WR I am looking for now. I want some shiftiness in my WRs. He's fast in a straight line.

I thought the stuff I saw and read indicated he was pretty good after the catch like Miles used to be.

Patterson is electric in the open field. For a dude his size he has crazy quickness and cutting ability. Hunter is more of a straight line speed guy. Hunter has excellent speed but he isn't what I would call shifty.

Yep. Him and Bryant together could be very, very difficult for defenses to handle. Almost perfect complements.
I like Austin but a 5'8" WR kind of freaks me out a little. He is bad ass in the open field but you generally don't look at a WR that small as a lead receiver.

Luckily we have Dez Bryant as our lead WR.

So your point, while compelling, is FACED.

I wish we had a thread dedicated just to what posters think about certain players, rookies and free agents. Would make for some good historical ammo.
