Say hello to CJ Mosely in the first round as soon as Nix is drafted.
Good possibility. As things stand now our draft spot is on the tail end of where the first tier defensive players will be taken. Most projections I see have Nix, Clinton-Dix and Mosely in the early to mid teens.

After that group the next BPA are mostly WR's, OL, TE, and CB's. If we want D front 7 or safety we'll have to hope one of those 3 is still on the board. If not, we're stuck like last year probably chasing need down the board or reaching.

If it were me and the top defenders are gone and BPA's are WR, OL, TE, CB then I'd go with one of the OL projected in the 15-20 range, Cyrus Kouandjio, Bama or Cameron Erving, FSU. But if Jerry chases the top need like usual then we could be screwed, because the next best DL are mostly rated now as late first rounders. Instead of moving down like last year I'd rather try to get a DL in the 2nd round because there looks to be a few quality one's projected in the middle of round 2.

Of course there's still 4 months til the draft so things will likely change between now and then. I just hope our strategy has changed and we don't just target one need or one side of the ball. We have far too many needs to do that and can't afford to bypass that many BPA.

Didn't Holloman play there Sunday night? Looked alright for practicing mostly on the outside this year. Or do I have that wrong?

I mean I'd rather draft other front 7 positions than MLB when we have Lee and in a pinch Holloman. If Lee's injury is more serious than we know then all bets are off.
Nope. We need a quality MLB. I don't think Lee can play more than half a season at a time. Holloman looks more like a SOLB than a true Mike....especially if we keep this defensive scheme.

The front seven is such a strong need this team can no longer afford to ignore that I can't see them taking anything besides DL or LB.

If Mosley is the BPA I'd be fine with him, it's hard to really say what I want because I'm not sure what scheme we'll be running. I assume it'll be a 4-3 but will it be a classic Tampa-2 or will it be a variant like what Seattle or Denver runs?

They have come out and said as much...it's not like the Jones boys have great poker faces.

When we get the new DC it will be interesting to see if they go for a more run stuffing type DT or the quick twitch that Kiffin favored.

Agreed. And it has to be a competent one as well because he'll most likely be called upon to start 3-5 games.

So that means we can't draft some undersized MLB from Devry in the 7th round and call it a day. We need a legit prospect from a bigger school.
We can't do that because our drafts are disasters when we get into the mentality of drafting backups.

With this personnel we are probably better off in a 3-4 (no surprise since most of them were brought in with the 3-4 in mind). Carter was pretty good when he took over for Lee last season. Ware looks like he's much better in a 3-4. And the holes in the DL are much less glaring and easier to fill adequately in a 3-4.

I love Sean Lee, even though he appears to be Glass Joe. His drive and awareness are unmatched on the squad.

What sucks for the team is not that Jerry took a flyer on an injured LB, but that he depends on that injury-prone guy to be a cornerstone.

When you're a shitty team, you don't take those chances. A guy like teh Leegro should have been taken to supplement an already well-stocked LB corps & gradually progress into more playing time.

Hopefully he can stay healthy next year. He and Dez are the type of "give a damn" guys this team sorely needs.
I agree, the only thing is most teams have more than 2-3 "Give a damn" guys. We have Witten who's almost at the end of his career, Dez who is an absolute headcase, and Lee who can only do so much from the sidelines.

Teams like the Seahawks/49ers/Patriots are filled with those players, which is the reasons they will be consistently in the playoffs. Dallas on the other hand, just doesn't have it.

Love me some Lee, but if they happen to cut him, I wouldn't be torn up about it.

So the feeling is that we're definitely getting a new DC?

Cause last I heard officially was that Kiffin wasn't being forced into retirement.
