Help me understand.

The version with Jim Belushi and Dan Akroyd that was doing some shows was ok but the movie with John and Dan absolutely had me cracking up. Plus loved the music.

That still does not help me understand why it is so popular.

Belushi was great in certain things and Akroyd was far more versatile.

I can honestly say I have not watched that movie from start to finish since I saw it on HBO when it finally hit cable.

These announcers are actually okay. Sure, they seem kinda spare because they aren't the big names, but I'm liking how they aren't proclaiming every player the greatest. I think Todd Blackledge is pretty decent. And no stupid booth ref.

As soon as I type that, there's Terry McCauliff.

I'm actually irritated about the next game being pay-only, though.

Not sure I can help you. If you didn't like it to begin with then it's probably not for you. I liked the dead pan comedy and the music. Probably the same as most others that liked the movie.
