  • So the whole medical industry is a bit fraudulent, right

I was recently diagnosed with Afib, I went to the doctor for an infection and he said my pulse was very high and my heart was beating erratically.

He directed me to a specialist, when I visited the specialist he kept asking me how I was diagnosed with this and what happened, he gave me another EKG and asked if I had ever shown any symptoms of Afib before, I told him I had not.

All the while he was looking at me and the chart like why was I even there, he scheduled me for a stress test and a ecocardiogram and then told me I was a low risk for stroke and took me off the blood thinners that were prescribed by the initial doctor along with Toprol.

The doctor then asked if I would like to undergo a shock procedure to correct the condition and I was like do I have a choice? I had read that they were no guarantees to correct the condition but I thought the doctor would be the one to make that decision.

I told him that I would not if there was no guaranteed benefit.

He then said that I was showing minimal signs anyway.

I told him about some sleep issues I been having and asked was it the medication after reading that insomnia was a side effect.

He then recommended I see a specialist about sleep apnea which I had no symptoms of.

That's when it all seemed a little fishy.

Anyway long story short after all of the test and having to pay around a 1000 in copay fees I found out my heart is fine but my blood pressure is a little high.

They wanted to put me on some other medication but I balked and they said they will just continue to "monitor" and wanted to have monthly visits at 60 dollars a pop.

All of these doctors work under the same umbrella and I wonder if referring to a"specialist is a kind of a scam they use when they find out you have semi good insurance.

Could see me dropping another 500 easily if I went through with the apnea stuff.

After all of this I am only on the initial medicine my primary physician prcribed for me all for a 20 dollar copay.

At least I know am reasonably healthy and exercise will improve that.

WTF happened to your writing skills? Are you sure you didn't get a stroke?

Good to hear you're in somewhat good shape, I guess...

        Never had any.

And was just typing it as I recalled it, did not edit at all.

Will go back and clean it up.

Dam that was terrible, after a read through I deserve every bit of ridicule.

Sleep deprivation is catching up with me.

Yeah, so fraudulent isn't the word I would use, but it's a combination of two things that really go back to the government.

First, they are scared to death of being sued so they will refer you to a specialist even if you don't really need it just to cover their asses.

Second, since health insurance has been systematically (for 50+ years, not just talking about shitty ass Obamacare) pushed on to the American public, and there is pressure to pay every claim, doctor and patients both have given carte Blanche to just bill away! No one questions costs.

I'll add a "third" here as well, stringent regulation (both by the government and by med boards themselves) have created such a barrier to entry of the field that there is little in the way of legit competition to keep prices down. Though I am not saying I want unlicensed doctors running around. Anyway, that is why the whole industry is so fucked.

True, it's more the lawyers that are suing for malpractice that's the bigger issue.

I have a friend that is finishing up at Baylor law. He can't wait to sue people.
