I was lucky to be able to watch him play, he was a good one. RIP.

Baseball great Willie McCovey — the Giants Hall of Famer after whom “McCovey Cove” is named in the San Francisco Bay waters beyond right field at AT&T Park — died Wednesday at 80, the team announced.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie McCovey passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 80 after losing his battle with ongoing health issues,’’ the team said on Twitter.

In a 22-year career, mostly with the Giants, between 1959 and 1980, McCovey hit 521 home runs — tied with Frank Thomas and Ted Williams for 20th all-time.

He played minor league ball in our little shithole town back in the 50s.

I tried getting in touch with him a while back to see if he'd be willing to discuss his time here, but was never able to track him down.
