All the scrimping and saving the Cowboys do on holding the money line on signing players, and yet by not getting a deal done with Dak earlier, they have cost themselves potentially millions per year. Not very smart, do you think?
JJT: Dak was always going to get more than $30 million per year no matter what you hear elsewhere. If it were me, I would always prefer to set the market as opposed to react to the market, but this is a complicated deal. It's not the money -- they could probably agree on that today. It's the structure. How much bonus? How much per year? How to structure the deal so the cap hit isn't that high every year? How to compensate Dak some for making so little in the first three years? All of that plays a role. Again, I would've tried to sign him before Carson Wentz but it's not the end of the world.
Is there one player you think is on the verge of having a breakout year?
JJT: You might think this is a strange answer to your question, but I think Dak Prescott is positioned to have a breakout season. This is his fourth year in the offense and he seems to have a good working relationship with assistant coaches Kellen Moore and Jon Kitna. Prescott has the best receiving corps he's ever had and Jason Witten gives him a quality security blanket on third down. Ezekiel Elliott is one of the best running backs in the NFL and the offensive line should be better this year with the return of Travis Frederick. All of that has positioned Prescott to have a huge season.
Would not coming to terms on a new contract for Dak Prescott before the season starts be as problematic as Michael Irvin makes it out to be?
JJT: Dak is going to get paid sooner rather than later. I expect it to get done the week before training camp or the first week of training camp. I would be shocked if it weren't done before the season begins. I'm not worried about the ramifications of Dak not getting signed until after Week 1.
Which assistant coach outside of Kris Richard has the best chance at becoming an NFL head coach?
JJT: Ultimately, if the offense does well then Moore is going to get some real looks at being a head coach in a year or two. That's it, for now, outside of Richard. But if the Cowboys do well they're both going to get a lot of attention.
What do you think about Cole Beasley going on a social media tear taking jabs at the Cowboys left and right?
JJT: Cole Beasley was frustrated with his situation in Dallas because he was frustrated with Scott Linehan as a play-caller. He's simply letting folks know about his frustrations right now. He's not mad at Dak. Or Kellen Moore. Or the Cowboys. He was frustrated with Linehan because he didn't let him run a variety of routes, especially vertical routes.
