I would not be surprised if Jones quite simply believes the regular season is already a 10-11 wins and he is not paying top dollar until he sees more than the divisional round. It is a very short sighted and idiotic strategy if so.
Why should Jones shell out a ton of money on Prescott hoping he can deliver a season to match his pay? You would just be putting yourself in the same old situation that has been going on for several seasons now. Pay me now for a season as though I actually did something other than demand more and hope I can match the pay. No thanks. Prescott has had a full plate on salary and delivered nothing even close to indicate he can deliver. all seasons have yielded the same. Pay me now and and hope it happens. No thanks that card has been punched too many times already.

That’s my position as well. You don’t pay top tier money to a guy who gives you C+/B- (or D- in the Green Bay disaster) performances against teams above .500 and in the playoffs. A+ play against tomato can teams is meaningless. You have to deliver when it matters, and Dak’s record in that respect is terrible.

Okay.

Wait for Jones to go down swinging in the draft and fail horribly.

Possibly so but the club will at least have the resources to try to get a decent prospect. There are probably some pretty good ones already waiting for a chance to try to upgrade the position . plus they will have some time to sift through some of the prospects.

To get the resources, they have to lose.

A lot.

Johnny Manziel
Paxton Lynch (!)
Connor Church
Trey Lance

Thats what the brain trust will get once Dak departs.

Well, at least they have a good RB plan.

I'm worried they go the more alternative plan like the Chad Hutchison, Trey Lance, Drew Henson, Ryan Leaf route.

We haven't just straight up gone for a top QB prospect since Troy Aikman.

If that method expedites Jerry’s trip into the dirt, then I support it. Again, we’re not winning anything with Dak, anyway. May as well have the benefit of a higher draft pick.

The time to do that would have been now. Why win 11-12 games and then let Dak walk? You've just fucked yourself for an extra year.

I feel like we have already gone the point of no return with Dak and sort of have to bring him back. Getting a third round comp pick in 2026 and trying to replace him in 2025 with a pick in the 20s sound like we are setting ourselves up in the worst way possible.

There was probably a way to do it but it would have involved shopping him months ago.

Exactly. That would be the worst path they could take.

I’d take a 3rd round comp pick and a low draft pick in 2025 over handcuffing ourselves to 5 more years of first round exits in the playoffs. Fuck that noise.

I'd resign Dak at this point, roll with him a couple more years and try to squeeze a first in a trade. On a 4 year deal, you should be ok to trade him after 2 years of it. Assuming nothing else changes.

That shouldn't have even been a path. But we already decided we will roll with him this year. I'm not going to let a major asset roll out the door for shit because he is "too expensive"
