All true, and maybe more should be expected of a #1 pick. But Mazi can't be expected to make up for the overall lack of size and physicality. I recall JJ emphasizing speed over size on defense. Somehow he made it work.
I didn’t like it then either, but when you land draft Leon Lett, Jimmy Jones, and Russell Maryland, trade for a veteran winner like Charles Haley, are able to talk Tony Casillas out of early retirement, and have Chad Hennings show up out of nowhere one day from drafts long past, things tend to work out on game day anyway.

Even then though, when the Dallas offense struggled and the opposing offense was balanced, our defense wasn’t strong enough to win by itself. They were statistically #1, but that was a reflection of the total team playing complementary football.

There was nothing complementary about how we played in Buffalo last week.

I've read where Quinn kept calling for nickel and dime packages even when Buffalo was lining up in heavy personnel. Not enough beef in those Dallas packages.
