Report: 49ers trying to trade Colt McCoy

Posted by Josh Alper on August 25, 2013, 1:04 PM EDT

The 49ers signed quarterback Seneca Wallace this week, a sure sign that they are less than thrilled with the options on hand to back up Colin Kaepernick this season.

It’s no big surprise, then, to hear that they’re trying to trade one of those players. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the 49ers are trying to trade Colt McCoy, who they acquired from the Browns prior to the draft for a pair of draft choices. Should their attempts at swinging a deal be unsuccessful, the 49ers are expected to release McCoy.

Doing so and going with Wallace or Scott Tolzien would save the 49ers a little less than $1 million under the salary cap, although McCoy’s preseason performance has been dismal enough that finances are likely a secondary consideration. McCoy is 6-of-13 for 76 yards in two preseason games and he’s thrown a pair of interceptions. McCoy, Wallace, Tolzien and B.J. Cunningham are all expected to play against the Vikings on Sunday as the 49ers sort out the bottom rungs of their depth chart.

It’s hard to see too much of a clamor for McCoy’s services on the trade market, but Rapoport reports they are fielding calls from teams. The Bills and Jets are both reportedly interested in kicking the tires on veterans Matt Leinart and John Beck, so they may also be interested in McCoy’s services.
