Jerry Jones: Brian Waters ready to take every snap; Anthony Spencer ‘real close to right’

Dallas Cowboys veteran guard Brian Waters split time with Mackenzy Bernadeau at right guard last week in Kansas City but Jerry Jones says the 36-year-old is ready to get all of the snaps at that position Sunday against St. Louis.

“I think he’s starting to get in the area of physical shape that he wants to be in,” Jones said Friday on the G-Bag Nation show on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “He certainly has played just really good. And he can help us if he does.”

Bernadeau and Waters, who sat out all of last season before signing with the Cowboys on Sept. 3, continued to share snaps at right guard during practice this week.

Waters played 18 offensive snaps against the Chiefs, entering into the game during the second and third series of each half.

Anthony Spencer is another player close to being at full strength, according to the Cowboys owner and general manager. The Pro Bowl defensive end saw his first action of the season last week, playing 34 of the team’s 67 defensive snaps.

Jones said Spencer’s “real close to right” after having arthroscopic left knee surgery on July 25.

“I understand our doctor, his doctors thought he’d be right as rain right now,” Jones said. “And it’s not a setback. It’s just that these things are different for different people.

“Now, he has pain. But we don’t have a player out there, for the most part, that’s not playing with some pain.”

Jerry Jones: Brian Waters is ready to start
September, 20, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said Friday he thinks guard Brian Waters is ready to start.

Waters made his debut last week and shared snaps at right guard with Mackenzy Bernadeau after more than a year away from the game. Waters said his play was so-so and he needed to work on his footwork in the run game.

"He's played just really good and he can help us," Jones said on KRLD-FM Friday morning.

In practices this week, Waters continues to share first-team snaps with Bernadeau, but he normally begins practice with the second team.

Standing in the way of Waters starting was his conditioning and whether or not he was up to speed on the offensive scheme. Grasping the offense and building chemistry hasn't been a problem for Waters but his techniques needed a little fixing.

The Cowboys have also worked Bernadeau at center in case rookie center Travis Frederick goes down with an injury. The team values Waters more as a starter than as a backup and is willing to move Bernadeau to the bench for that to happen.

And yet, there was Bernadeau taking first team RG snaps after taking second team C snaps yesterday.

The coaches probably don't think Waters is ready but the carnival barker is saying to the media that he is. Typical.

If that's the case, I side with Jones. I didn't see anything against KC that suggested Waters isn't ready. Bernadeau did his usual average to bad shit.

I want Waters to start if he's ready. I just want the decision to rest with the coaches, not Jerry Jones.

At this point I don't care, I just want the decision to be that Waters is starting. We already know that Jerry meddles. We would be retarded to not have him in the starting lineup.
