Wait until Thanksgiving when we are on the road before the Thanksgiving game. The Lions are coming off a bye, and we're coming off a short week with travel?
Thanks, NFL!
Lawson made some plays, Wheat and Golston I thought all played admirable at being disciplined and setting the edge. There is something to be said about just doing your damn job.Frankly, Wheat impressed me yesterday for being a scrub come out of nowhere. He'll have the size to at least get in Sewell's way.
This is likely true. Goff is good at passing too. He is going to see open guys and complete passes. And throw screens that we still suck against. The Lions are going to bully ball this depleted DL. The Steelers OL is no comparison.
I think it comes down to they're the far better team with us as injured as we are. We'll be lucky to keep it even halfway close unless somehow the offense comes to life.We are going to have to blitz more often to get pressure, so Zimmer has to be able to disguise it and fool Goff. We also can't overreact to play-action. That's what this game comes down to, IMO.
I was actually thinking about this this morning while watching some of the game highlights. I honestly don't think we'd have defended the run as well if Parsons were in the lineup. It seemed like the JAGs we threw out there simply did their jobs. Nothing flashy. They set the edge and prevented them from gashing them on perimeter. At least we won't have a 240 pound defender on the line facing Penei Sewell in the running game.
This gives us an actual chance to stop the rush which is where we need help most anyway. With Parsons in there, the extra pass rush isn't worth his getting blown off the line on running plays to his side. IMO, Parsons needs some space between him and the OT to be more effective and take advantage of his speed advantage.
I've been thinking about this for the last few weeks but I think for his own good they need to shift Parson's role.I was actually thinking about this this morning while watching some of the game highlights. I think you can make a legit argument that it was a good trade off at least for this week.
I think he wants to play the run. His problem is he wants to make the big play so bad that he abandons his assignments. The guy jumps inside all the time. The problem is when he does it we totally lose the edge and we get gashed. Parsons is going to have to learn to be disciplined. Or we are going to have to start using him as a 3rd and long DE and move him somewhere else on early downs.I don't think it's much of a secret that Parsons has no interest in playing the run, and isn't big enough to do it that well anyway. It's kind of a problem and I don't know how you deal with that going forward.
The problem I heard Broaddus or someone saying -- Broaddus is a buffoon and I don't trust his opinions or judgement at all but he does have some sources with the team -- is that supposedly Parsons doesn't like to watch film and doesn't want to play LB. Otherwise I think we'd have to use him exactly like Denver did Von Miller when he was younger and only weighed 240 or whatever.I'm not sure how to describe the exact role, it wouldn't be a 3-4 OLB or 4-3 OLB exactly, but have him line up off-ball more, bring him on run blitzes and obviously he'd be in on every clear pass-rushing situation.
Drop his overall snaps down to the 65-70% range to preserve what makes him special instead of wasting him out there on 2nd and 5 trying to hold the POA against a TE/RT combo.
I think we're saying the same thing. Part of wanting to play the run is taking on those blocks with proper technique and not jumping around them like you say. If you aren't willing to stop doing that, you don't really want to play the run.I think he wants to play the run. His problem is he wants to make the big play so bad that he abandons his assignments. Herbig is 240 pounds playing that spot for the Steelers. The problem I heard Broaddus or someone saying -- Broaddus is a buffoon and I don't trust his opinions or judgement at all but he does have some sources with the team -- is that supposedly Parsons doesn't like to watch film and doesn't want to play LB. One thought I have, I hate that he worked out on his own over the summer and lost weight. I think I'd just convince him to work out with the team, get bigger and stronger even if he costs him a quarter-step, and play a 34 with him at LB -- just like Watt. I think he'd be big enough to do that in that case. I mean, Watt is listed at 252. Parsons could easily get to that weight, and he's definitely strong and explosive enough.
But he'd have to want to do the dirty work, which right now he doesn't so much.
There you go.Herbig is 240 pounds playing that spot for the Steelers.
What? I was up early.
