I'd argue he cares a lot about money, then almost as much about being the big man on campus, then a little about winning. He only "walks on eggshells" when he needs a new stadium. He only moves on from a shit coach when bringing the guy back would hurt ticket and merch sales. You can write all the poetry you want about what "gnaws at the heart of the inner turmoil of haunted Jerry Jones" or whatever the hell, but judge the man on his actions and you see his priorities clear as day. He's a dismal failure at the thing he craves the most -- being thought of as a "football guy." He's a dismal failure at overcoming the commonly held belief that Jimmy Johnson was the architect of those successes in the '90s -- not Jerry Jones. He's a dismal failure at the only thing that counts in the NFL -- winning.
They don't hand out Lombardi Trophies for increasing the value of your franchise. They hand them out for winning.
Most NFL franchises are worth tons more than they were in 1989. So what? And lots of hedge fund managers and investment bankers could parlay $140 million into billions over the course of 30 years. (Jerry paid $140 million for the team, not $50 million.)
Jimmy Johnson got into the HOF for winning games. Jerry got in for being a huckster, a snake oil salesman and a carnival barker.
