Cowboys coach Jason Garrett has taken plenty of criticism after Sunday’s loss in Washington, with his overly conservative play calling having the Cowboys ending the game with a long missed field goal rather than taking a shot at the end zone. But Garrett won’t second-guess himself.

Garrett said after the game that the goal was to get into field goal range, and the offense accomplished that goal. Just because the field goal missed, Garrett says, that doesn’t mean the strategy was wrong.

“The biggest thing after we got ourselves into field goal range was to try to get up there and clock the ball, preserve that last timeout and then give us the freedom,” Garrett said. “I think we were trying to get the ball down to 12 seconds. So once we got down to that point, the biggest thing that we wanted to do was maximize the field goal opportunity and run the ball, make some yards, use the timeout and then kick the game-tying field goal.”

But why settle for just getting the field goal range, when a field goal only would have sent the game into overtime? Why not try to win in regulation? On their last three offensive plays the Cowboys threw two short passes to Cole Beasley and then handed off to Ezekiel Elliott before the field goal attempt, rather than trying to go downfield to score a touchdown. Just getting into field goal range shouldn’t have been Garrett’s end goal.

Fucking moron. Any other team's goal in that situation is to score the game winning TD. And if you're unable to do that, you take the consolation prize of the game tying FG.

That's not part of the Process.

It's not just about not going for the TD, it's about failing to get closer for the FG attempt.

I was in Dallas for the Jags game and was telling a cab driver how Garrett consistently fucks up late game situations and is all too happy to settle for 40+ yard FG attempts when there is more than enough time on the clock to get closer. Even without the penalty the kick would've been 47 on a windy day outdoors, not a chip shot by any means yet they fail to maximize their odds by working to get it into the 35-40 range.

The Bengals game in 2012 is the perfect example. We were down 19-17 and converted a 1st down to the Bengals 24 with A FULL MINUTE AND TWO TIMEOUTS left, do you know where we ended up kicking the FG from?

The Bengals 22, we ran one god damned play with 1 minute and 2 timeouts left, and it was a Murray run for 2 yards. Now, Bailey made the kick and a 40 yard FG isn't necessarily "long", but with a minute and two timeouts you can easily gain 5-10 more yards and turn that into what is basically an XP now.

That was six damn years ago, and this is exactly why people say that this moron Garrett never learns.

Arizona 2011 and Baltimore 2012 are two other prime examples of this exact same type of idiocy.

Then of course you have the 2016 Packers playoff game.
