No doubt. Shits about to get harder for them to build a team. Which is why they should have cut ties with Garrett a lot earlier. They drug their feet and decided to let a POS head coach hang around and they ended up wasting that golden 4 year window where Dak was playing on a rookie contract.

This front office just doesn't want to cut the cord, but Griffen might be asking for way too much.
It sickens me whenever anyone mentions Crawford as anything resembling an 'option' at RDE. It screams of their ignorance to the fact that he's never done anything good when they've tried to force him out there. It's a total lose-lose proposition. A disservice to the player and hindrance to the team.

I think the coaching staff actually wants to use Crawford as a 5T/old school 3-4 DE type. Whether or not they'd prefer to keep him instead of recouping that cap space and using it elsewhere I have no clue, but I don't think their plan is to use him as a pure edge rusher like Griffen.

They will be using him as a DT.

I’m just talking about the cap space and the overall pool of money/foster slots dedicated to the DL.

Currently there is no proven solution at RDE, even one as feeble as Crawford.

Moving him back and forth fucked up his early development as it is.

Before it's all said and done, Crawford will be taking/getting a pay cut. Especially if Gregory and Smith are reinstated. The numbers will make him redundant.

That has to be what they're waiting on.

I'll tell you the guy they should try to sign right now to an extension before he gets unaffordable: Michael Gallup.

See if you can give him $40m-$50m today.
Gallup is going to sign the richest WR deal in history when his rookie deal runs out. I predict Washington is going to give it to him.

Yeah. But until then, all the teeth gnashing and wringing of hands is a humorous distraction.

I don't think we know that and if you go strictly by their offseason moves it almost seems as if they expect him to be DE depth. They've barely done anything at that spot that you can count on with any certainty.

Yea, I think he's going to play that jumbo/5T/3-4 DE type role in base packages and then kick inside to rush in nickel/dime along with McCoy/Gallimore and maybe Smith if he's reinstated.

That's generally what he did under Marinelli/Richard the last few years and with this staff mixing 3-4 and 4-3 principles I think it just makes it even more likely he's used similarly.

I'm guessing that the team is waiting on Crawford to pass a physical. Once he does that, like the Panthers did with Cam Newton, the Cowboys can cut him without any sort of an injury settlement. At that point, their leverage would be at its highest to either make him take a paycut, or release him outright.

Is he better being paired with a McCoy or Poe (not sure which spot he plays inside) ?

Personally I'd only kick him inside in clear pass rushing situations/nickel and dime alignments, so in that case it'd be McCoy or Gallimore.

I'd only have him inside at DT in base packages in an emergency of some sort.

I wonder what the timeline is on that in the context of his deal?

His salary isn't guaranteed unless he's on the opening day roster. I think they can do something right up until then, but I wouldn't want to risk re-injury under his current contract. They sat back and did nothing despite all the warning signs last year and they got burned - badly.
