The 2018 Dallas Cowboys have begun to establish who they are, and it’s unlike anything fans or the NFL has seen from them in the past few years. Instead of being an offensive juggernaut with the weight of the entire team’s success squarely on it’s shoulders, the Cowboys have developed into a team who’s most dominant and consistent unit is their defense.

This isn’t random banter, the stats prove it. The Cowboys are the best defense in the NFC in both points allowed (17.2 PPG) and yards allowed(315.2 YPG). While the NFC East is seen as a down division, with defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia having some issues out the gate and New York looking like one of the league’s worst teams with the absolute worst starting quarterback, defensively it’s a strong group.

All four of the teams are in the top half of the conference when it comes to yardage allowed, and the top half of the league. Three of the teams are in the top-third of the conference in points allowed.

How does Dallas stack up with their divisional foes, in conference, as the race for the NFC East begin to heat up?
Washington Redskins

PPG Allowed: 20.8 (NFC: No. 6), YPG Allowed: 326.2 (NFC: No. 2)

The Cowboys travel to the nation’s capital in a battle against division leader Washington who boast one of the NFC’s best defenses as well.

New York Giants

PPG Allowed: 27.0 (NFC: 10) ,YPG Allowed: 358.0 (NFC: 8-tie)

The New York Giants are reeling right now and their defense is a large part. Allowing 27 points a game and almost 360 yards is a deal breaker for a team with inconsistent offensive outputs like the Giants have.

The Cowboys defensive numbers include that Week 2 win against these same New York Giants where the Cowboys held the Giants to 255 total yards and six sacks of Eli Manning.

Philadelphia Eagles

PPG Allowed: 19.5 (NFC: No. 4), YPG Allowed: 352.8 (NFC: No. 7)

The Eagles are still trying to find the formula that brought them a Super Bowl last year but are also performing decently against the rest of the NFC defensively. The Cowboys have two games left to pay against the Eagles.

The defensive numbers of NFC East may be indicative of a larger broader picture. The Cowboys, Redskins and Eagles all have defenses that can get them stops. It’s no wonder they are all neck and neck for the NFC East lead right now. The Cowboys will lean on their defense as they hope the offense is turning the corner following a 40 point explosion at the expense of the Jaguars vaunted defense.
