Cowboys in no rush to hurry up rookies' return

Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas -- Rookies Chaz Green and Mark Nzeocha are eligible to practice for the first time in the regular season but the Dallas Cowboys are in no need to rush either draft pick.

Green, the Cowboys’ third-round pick, had hip surgery on the offseason and is on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. Nzeocha, a seventh rounder, is on the reserve/non-football injury list recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered last season at Wyoming.

By rule, they had to miss the first six weeks of the season. The Cowboys have until Nov. 2 to decide whether to activate them in order for them to practice. Once they are activated, the Cowboys will have another three weeks in which to decide to add them to the 53-man roster.

The latest in which they can play a game is Nov. 26 against the Carolina Panthers.

The Cowboys drafted Green with the intent of him being the team’s swing tackle behind Tyron Smith and Doug Free, but he suffered a labrum tear in spring workouts. He started all but one game in three seasons at Florida, missing the 2013 season with a shoulder injury. He started nine games at right tackle and two at left tackle for the Gators in 2014.

Nzeocha, who grew up in Germany, started seven games last year before hurting the knee. He was credited with 59 tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss, five pass breakups and two forced fumbles before the injury. The Cowboys envisioned him as a special teams’ contributor as a rookie.

Considering the time they have missed, they will be hard-pressed to be added to the 53-man roster unless there are other injuries.
