Captains: Romo, Witten, Durant, Church, Bailey

IRVING, Texas -- Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Barry Church, Justin Durant and Dan Bailey were voted captains of the Dallas Cowboys.
Three of the five captains are undrafted free agents: Romo, Church and Bailey.
Last year’s defensive captains were Sean Lee and DeMarcus Ware. Lee is out for the year with a knee injury and Ware was released in March.
Church has gone from an afterthought in 2010 as an undrafted free agent, to role player, to starter and now to captain.
“It’s just what he’s all about,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s always been about taking advantage of opportunities. Undrafted free agent that’s come in here and told us he needs to make this football team and shows us every day he deserves to be a part of that. Everything we’ve asked him to do since he’s been here, he’s always overproduced.”
Durant was viewed as a potential bubble player in the roster in the spring, but when Sean Lee suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in organized team activities the Cowboys quickly looked at him as the middle linebacker’s replacement.
In trying to get their best three linebackers on the field, the Cowboys will play Durant at weak-side linebacker in Sunday’s opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
“Justin’s really taken the bull by the horns and shown us that he needs to be the leader of that defense,” Garrett said. “He’s very comfortable making calls, making adjustments and maybe more than anything else he does it with his play every day in practice. In the preseason games he brings it and again guys gravitate towards that and really respect that.”
Durant, who was last a captain at Hampton, said he was humbled by his teammates’ votes, but he will not become more of a vocal leader.
“They chose me without being one of the big talkers that so I think that would be something outside my character,” Durant said. “They’d look at me like, ‘Oh, he’s a captain now.’ I’m going to be the same person and do what I’ve been doing, which is the reason why they chose me.”
