This week's game and soon subsequently the Chargers games are huge, and of course continued focus may be the biggest problem

You know how this team likes to read its own press

Finishing 5-0 is no joke, a serious challenge no matter who a team faces
Just win this one game against a very good team at their place. Until that happens, I'm not even thinking about the bigger picture.

Because if you lose, you're .500 again, and all this playoff talk turns to complaining about what a terrible year its been.

This would be priority 1a for me. With 1b being to get Pickens signed long term.
Going off the contracts we have all 4 back for at least 1 more year. Im sure some cap manipulating will be done and at the very least Pickens will be franchised.

So we should have a full season of all 4 before Clark and/or Pickens walks.

Losing a game here doesn't mean much to me in the grand scheme, starting with the Raiders game I almost consider this a new team with the influx of defensive talent. Obviously making the playoffs would be great but it's not a dealbreaker for me unless they look like absolute shit.

If they tank the last 5 games, sure, complain away, but if they end up 10-6-1 or even 9-7-1 depending on how it looks, and I'll be plenty optimistic going into next year.

I definitely agree. I think this version of the team has pretty much already shown it can play with anyone. I was talking about the general fan/media attitude. They'll be doom and gloom even though losing to Detroit at their place could happen to any team.

Yeah, that's where the coaches need to be. Win this next game. Build on the positive and keep improving. That's your only job. Be better each week.

This is arguably the most sense I've ever heard out of Jerry's mouth in my life, maybe that's why they were able to make some actual good decisions at DT.
This DT development alone is like having had a deep postseason run all by itself. Maybe not, but it is huge and moreover gives me hope the organization FINALLY understands how defense fucking works.

It only took 'em 30 years.

Right, it's like they forgot about the great DT rotation of the 90s glory years, or Bob Lilly, and Randy fuckin White.

Exactly! They got all caught up in sack and pass defense numbers and forgot that none of it matters if you can't contain a QB's step up room or stop the run from ripping you a new one and keeping you guessing
Stopping the run should be paramount in any defensive scheme … it makes an offense 1 dementional.. puts more pressure on the QB…allows you to keep players back in the secondary instead of packing the line …I don’t know where any of our coaches have lost sight of this

Probably because all Jerry's pea brain can remember from those 90's defenses was the impact made by Haley and Deion, so he spent 30 years thinking DE and CB were the two most important positions on defense.

I almost posted that in his interview today he sounded sensible, like he had half an idea what he was doing. It was weird.

I do wonder who finally got through to him on the interior DL. He talked about getting both fronts beefed up over the last couple of years. I know Mike talked about that from his first year but they never really did that much until the Mazi attempt.

In all fairness the NFL in general sort of abandoned the run game for awhile. And you were seeing dynamic pass rushing duos win Superbowls. See Von Miller and Ware as an example.
