He's set to earn over $400 million in his career by the end of his current contract, and that doesn't include endorsements.

He could make half that and support every single person he's ever known.
Taking less seems to be kind of rare in the NFL but we see it all the time in the NBA don't we? So it's not totally crazy. It's just easier for a player to see the impact of taking less in the NBA where roster sizes are so much smaller.

Then tell me why nobody but Brady has done it?

You hear other players say "I'm going to get mine" all the time.

This isn't true.

Look at Mahomes for example. He signed a 10 year deal knowing full well that he'd be underpaid pretty quickly under that deal. Tyron Smith did the same thing.

Meanwhile Dak insisted on a short contract so that he could make sure he's at market value as much as possible.

Thats still only 1 person and I was going on the premise that they were asking for a paycut. Instead of taking that 60 million wny didnt Patrick say 40 is fine and lets get other players in here?

That's 2 actually plus Brady and that's just off the top of my head. It does happen. Admittedly not as often as guys taking as much as possible but it does happen.

Patrick signed a 10 year $450 million deal, not sure where your $60 is coming from.

And he is the guy who should be getting paid the most.

next three years cap hit is over 60. When he signed it I believe 45 was the top salary?

$45 was probably about the top salary at the time but the 10 years is a big deal because that same 45 is already nowhere near the top salary just a few years later. If he was up right now he'd be pushing $70 a year by market value.

That cap hit can easily be moved around which is one of the advantages of a contract that long.

I get that but you have also seen deals get redone mid deal because of market as well (the Zack Martin effect). I dont know that Mahomes would do that but his agent may push for it.

Still even with that it was more of why dont they ask for less to help the teams more. I mean should the QBs be getting almost double what everybody else is? Im all for closing that gap but you really wont see players asking for it.

The only way that gap closes if the NFL becomes less of a passing league (No one will let this happen long term) or the supply of talented QBs goes up (Has the NFL ever had a surplus of talented passers?)

Right now there is just no real path to compete without a really good QB. Maybe offenses will evolve to be less dependent on the QB (sort of like the 49ers) but unless that happens more league wide you'll continue to see QBs making twice as much as any other position.

It’s a major competitive advantage, and Mahomes’ own way of pulling a Brady and taking less money.

Having the best QB in the NFL already makes them a contender, and when they couple that with such a flexible contract they can all but ensure they can back that QB with a competitive team for years to come.

They still have to draft well and backfill key pieces like Reek, Jones, and Kelce, but the stage has been set as well as it ever has been for a team in the post salary cap era

Yep. Tyron did that for us and it's one of the reasons that I will forever defend that dude. It's a big help.

That was about as dull as that game.
About the only thing I liked was when Lawrence or whoever it was asked Kneeland if he got credit for a sack or TFL, and he was like, "I don't even care."
