Agreed all around.

They do deserve more than just tuition and board and I've never had a problem with the idea of them being financially compensated.

The problem now is that they're being paid like professionals even before they've proven they can play at the collegiate level.

It never should have gotten to this.
10 million for a college athlete to transfer to another program is insane and it’s going to ruin the sport sooner than later.

Does anything prevent NCAA from changing the rules and increasing the number of years a player can play college football?

Yeah right now the only reason the NFL is still going to get the talent is because college players eventually age out. But the rookie salary cap can't compete with some of these college salaries. The eligibility requirement is the only thing stopping college football from competing directly with the NFL.

I love a bit of competition, and NCAA programs have as much brand recognition and as many decades of football tradition as the oldest NFL teams.

College, end of the day, is meant to be a temporary learning experience, so there should be an eligibility limit, but five years is short. What if I’m going for my masters or PhD?

The NFL needs to invert their model to a degree anyway. Top draft picks, especially the elite talent, shouldn’t be “cheap rookies”. They only have so long to profit from their athletic prowess, and what do they have to show for their time as a pro? PTSD? At least in college they can come away with multiple degrees, even after suffering a football career-ending injury.

It also gives some players a chance to season before going pro. I’m a firm believer players deserve every opportunity they can get.

It beats Dak Prescott soaking up 60 million in cap space. I mean, where’s the fairness in that?

I agree. If I was an athlete that could make 10-20 million in college football, come out with a degree, save the weary and tear of the NFL on my body…. hell I’m not sure I’d even entertain the NFL.

Yup.

It wouldn't surprise me if you started seeing exactly that from more college athletes, especially with this newer generation that don't live and breathe the sports they play like the older generations did.

And I wouldn't blame them, especially with all the info we've got now with what playing football long term does to the brain and how it affects their overall quality of life in their later years.

Get a bunch of money, play football at a very high level, get that experience of hearing the roar of the crowd, then stop playing after 4 of 5 years with millions in your pocket and a degree.

I can't think of a more perfect way to start on your journey of adulthood than being ready to take on the world at 25 with all of that under your belt.

I don't think I'd even go to NFL after that.

I haven't though about it in that context before. This may, in the long run, cause a talent drain on the NFL, which they can ill-afford.

then we could compete with the XFL.

Never happen. Guys. People are greedy. Why only get 10 when you can get another 40 or 50.

Never is a strong word.

If college football keeps trending the direction it’s going, these kids will have 20-30 million in the bank or more given the royalties they could earn with video games etc in their pocket.
