With comp picks added to the mix, round 7 is basically what used to be the udfa pool anyways.It is not just Dallas. UDFAs make up around 30% of the NFL workforce I believe.
Do we romanticize a lot of them? Sure. But the numbers don't lie.
I understand the players have to come from somewhere and at some point it’s just sheer numbers that extend beyond the draft. If the average career is 4 years, 32 x 7.5 x 4 is only 960, which is far short of the over 1500 roster spots.
Not everyone drafts well to begin with, and the gap between round 5 and the start of “round 8” is much less than the gap between round 2 and round 5.
Statistically speaking you probably will hit on a player who lands on the active roster more often among ten-twenty udfa’s than you will with three players from rounds 5-7.
But will that guy be any good? As in good enough to be actually excited about?
Once in a blue moon. But fans do it every year anyway.
