There has to be something to it if Hooper is bringing his name up like that as an example of how he WON'T conduct himself. Witten can be both a great player on the field and selfish off of it. And it sounds like that was the case.

Plus it's not that uncommon for something like that to happen. There are only so many jobs to go around in the NFL so there are a lot of vets who have the mindset that it's not their job to help young players get better. It's about self-preservation and not wanting to help someone take food and stability away from you and your family.

When a guy is in his prime? Sure. survival of the fittest and all that. But there also comes a time when you know where you are in your career, and stop being about yourself and 'your spot' and start doing what's truly best for the team.

Witten is certainly in the back nine of his career and to still hold the same mindset is selfish in my opinion.
