Robert Griffin III: “We’re not what our record says we are”

Posted by Michael David Smith on November 28, 2013, 7:41 AM EST

Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells liked to say, “You are what your record says you are.” Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III doesn’t see it that way.

After his team fell to 3-8 on Monday night, Griffin said the frustrating part of that record is that he and his teammates know that they’re better than their 3-8 record would suggest.

“Any time you lose in the National Football League, there’s going to be criticism and we understand that,” Griffin said. “The hardest part of all of this is probably the fact that we know that we’re not what our record says we are.”

When asked about the personal challenges he’s having this season, Griffin again turned the answer to his team, and to saying his team is better than 3-8.

“I mean, this is a team game,” Griffin said. “I’m not going to sit up here and talk about myself. So like I was going to say, talking to those guys in the locker room, we know we’re not what our record says we are and that’s what makes it tough. It wouldn’t be this hard and no one would be criticizing if we didn’t think we were a good team, if people didn’t think we were a good team.”

People thought they were a good team heading into this season, but that’s not the case anymore. Now people think they’re a 3-8 team, because that’s what their record says they are.

If he was playing well and they asked him about his individual play, would he still turn the discussion toward the team? Just wondering. Because he seemed like he reveled in all the acclaim he got last year. Leaders are accountable.

I see RG3 went to the same school of stupidity as Jerry Jones.

Owner-QB link disillusioned coach

Shanahan Was Ready To Quit After 2012

The "Sunday NFL Countdown" crew reacts to the news that Redskins coach Mike Shanahan was ready to leave the team after the 2012 season due to Dan Snyder's relationship with Robert Griffin III.Tags: Mike Shanahan, Dan Snyder, Robert Griffin III, RG III, Washington Redskins

As speculation mounts about Mike Shanahan's future in Washington, details have emerged about the coach's dissatisfaction with the relationship between owner Dan Snyder and quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Disillusioned with the way Snyder was running the organization, Shanahan cleaned out his office in advance of January's wild-card playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks and expected to leave the team whenever the season ended, according to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The source said Shanahan had grown tired of the way Snyder empowered Griffin and openly esteemed him above all other players. Shanahan didn't blame Griffin but did blame Snyder for creating an atmosphere that Shanahan did not believe was conducive to winning. Shanahan privately told people close to him that he felt Snyder's behavior with regard to Griffin was a "complete farce."

In spite of that, Shanahan believed he would be leaving the team on a very positive note, as the Redskins had won the NFC East in his third year as their coach and were preparing for a playoff run. He believed the team had come together and shown strong character during the seven-game winning streak on which it ended the regular season.

But when Griffin injured his knee in that playoff loss, a source said, Shanahan changed his plans. He believed leaving at that point was no longer an option. He didn't want the general public, or possibly even his players, to think he left because of Griffin's injury.

Contacted this weekend about this information, Shanahan declined to comment.

Through team spokesman Tony Wyllie, the Redskins said, "That story is ridiculous."

A team source said Shanahan had grown weary by January of the way Snyder treated Griffin, empowering his quarterback and helping make him feel bigger than the team. The issue apparently carried over into the offseason and into this season.

Snyder regularly sent his security team to accompany Griffin when he went out in Washington. Snyder's personal driver was spotted picking up Griffin's then-fiancee (now wife) at road games.

But it wasn't just Snyder's relationship with Griffin that irked Shanahan. It was also the way in which he dealt with employees who had less star power than his star quarterback, sources said. After Kirk Cousins relieved an injured Griffin last December in Cleveland and led Washington to a 38-21 victory over the Browns, players and coaches spotted Snyder standing at the quarterbacks' lockers, talking only to Griffin while, one source said, Snyder "didn't acknowledge" Cousins.

The strain in the Shanahan-Snyder relationship is one of several negative backdrops to a season gone wrong in Washington, and the question now is what happens with Shanahan at season's end.

Those who know him believe that, if he was willing to walk away last season, he might be willing to do the same this offseason. Snyder also could decide to fire him.

Either way, it appears a breakup is inevitable. Shanahan has one year left on his contract, and the Redskins are struggling through a disappointing season at 3-9. As a result of the 2012 trade that allowed the Redskins to draft Griffin, the team doesn't even have a first-round draft pick in 2014. The Rams hold that pick, which, if the season ended Sunday, would be the No. 2 pick overall.

That's what happens when owner's meddle.

Hey, that is a nice reminder. Even if Jerry broke down and hired a GM, he would still undermine them too.

It would just be another person in the organization who he could cut the nuts off of.

I'd rather have the guy (Snyder) who has already proven he can hire a real GM and step away from the day to day football operations.

Our guy has shown that even if he relinquishes some control, he'll still always meddle.

If I was Shanny, I'd be happy to leave. Their probably #2 overall pick is going to St Louis. It's going to be a long time before that team gets better.

Kyle Shanahan May Be at Center of Redskins Coaching Drama
By Dianna Russini | Tuesday, Dec 10, 2013

There's reason to believe that Kyle Shanahan is what is driving Mike Shanahan to want out as head coach of the Washington Redskins, a couple of strong sources within the organization told News4 Sports.

Kyle Shanahan's role in the organization as offensive coordinator may be putting the head coach in a position where he has to choose between his son and his job.

Sources told us that the coach is not being fired Tuesday and will be at practice Wednesday when the team begins work for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons.

We also just confirmed with the Redskins that Dan Snyder will not be involved in any player decisions and will allow the head coach to make the call as to whether Robert Griffin III or Kirk Cousins starts at quarterback Sunday against the Falcons.
