Subway suspends pitchman Jared Fogle as police search his Indiana home

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (Reuters) - Authorities conducted a day-long search inside the Indiana home of Subway sandwich chain pitchman Jared Fogle on Tuesday, two months after the executive director of Fogle's foundation was arrested on federal child pornography charges.

As authorities concluded their search for the day, Subway said it was suspending its relationship with Fogle due to the investigation, which the company said it believed was linked to the probe of a former foundation executive.

"Jared continues to cooperate with authorities and he expects no actions to be forthcoming," Subway said in a statement. "Both Jared and Subway agree that this was the appropriate step to take."

By early evening on Tuesday, promotional references to Fogle had been removed from Subway's website.

Authorities were observed on Tuesday removing numerous items from Fogle's home, carrying them out in bags, boxes and briefcases. Fogle was present for part of the search, but he left his home in the Zionsville suburb northwest of Indianapolis around midday as the search continued.

Authorities, who first arrived at the home about 6:30 a.m., ultimately pulled out around 5 p.m.

It was not clear whether Fogle, a father of two, is a target of what authorities have said is a joint investigation by local, state and federal law enforcement.

FBI spokeswoman Wendy Osborne declined to comment about the activity at Fogle's home, other than to confirm investigative efforts in the area. She said she could not discuss whether the actions at Fogle's home were connected to the child porn case against Russell Taylor, the former foundation executive.

Fogle's attorney said Fogle has not been detained or arrested or charged "with any crime or offense."

"Jared has been cooperating, and continues to cooperate, with law enforcement in their investigation of unspecified charges and looks forward to its conclusion," attorney Ron Elberger said in a statement.

A neighbor who asked not to be identified by name said Fogle and his family had lived in their home for about four years and generally were very "private."

Fogle became a Subway spokesman after losing a reported 245 pounds (111 kg) in part by eating regularly at the sandwich chain. Fogle made his first Subway commercial in 2000 and appeared in a new one last year, according to Subway.

Along with the FBI, the Indiana State Police assisted the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Indiana in the investigation, according to state police spokesman Sergeant Richard Myers. U.S. Postal Service agents also assisted in the investigation.

Taylor, the Jared Foundation's former executive director, is currently in federal custody facing seven counts of production of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. He has not yet entered a plea, said his attorney Brad Banks.

Banks would also not comment on the investigation.

Authorities said they found videos they believe Taylor produced by secretly filming minor children at his home. The investigators said they found more than 400 videos of alleged child pornography in his Indianapolis home.

Eh. That guy looks like a pre-vert. Wouldn't be shocked.

Given the situation, they are probably looking for emails to see if his creepy buddy told him anything about what he was up to.

Dude has a net worth of over $15 million, reportedly. Thus far none of the accusations involve HIM. I don't know if he has a contract or not, but if he does I think he needs to call his lawyer.

EDIT: Scratch the above about calling the lawyer. Another report has this as a "mutual agreement" between this Jared, and the Subway corporation.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/07/07/reports-investigators-spotted-at-home-of-subway-spokesman-jared-fogle/

“Subway and Jared Fogle have mutually agreed to suspend their relationship due to the current investigation,” a Subway spokesman said in a statement late Tuesday.
That's the first part of the quote, which for some reason the Reuters article in the OP, left out.

Also, this Jared immediately severed all ties with the suspect after his April 29 arrest.

That seems plausible, but why wouldn't the police come out and say they weren't currently investigating Jared if that is the case? This isn't like investigating graffiti. There's real consequences from even the hint you might have something to do with child porn. His career is basically ruined at this point no matter what happens.

No joke, this is sad. Dude sets up a philanthropic foundation. Doesn't have to. Ends up losing his cash cow over something that he really can't control/prevent.

Wouldve been better off being an asshole and buying a yacht.

Cops work like that, but the FBI really don't. They raided the corporate offices of the company my wife works for (a liquor store chain) last year as part of an investigation into money laundering by some people who own several bars in Austin. They announced nothing publicly about what the raid was for and never got back to the company about it. They keep their cards pretty close to the vest.

Chasing down child pornographers is slippery business. I don't blame them at all for giving no information, no reason any of these fucks should learn about the scope of the investigation. Most criminals suck at alluding authorities. These guys are organized and well coached to evade detection.

I get that but if Jared really had no knowledge of any of this going on and his life is now ruined as a result I wouldn't exactly call that acceptable police work. What's the point of catching the criminal if you end up ruining other people's lives in the process.

Well, not exactly ruined since the "suspension" was reportedly by mutual agreement. He's not fired as yet. I am sure he is under contract.

He's $15 million ahead as it is - that's a lot better than most of us.

And being labeled a child predator does ruin people's lives. But moving beyond that if the police say cost Jared 5 mil because of this investigation, whats the difference between that and a criminal stealing the 5 mil from Jared. The guy becomes a victim either way.

I agree, if he is charged or implicated. So far he's not.

The guy became a household name by not being as fat as he used to be. Life is not fair. What're the odds that some mega corp would decide to make his pasty ass the face of their fake "healthy" menu. Now that he accidentally hired a pedophile, he stands to lose a relationship which lasted a shockingly long time. That's like getting mad that a convenient store wont sell you any more scratch offs, because you keep winning jackpots.

Jared doesn't deserve more rights than anyone else. These searches were carried out according to the letter of the law. If it stops one kid from getting fucked on camera, it's a net positive.

Two problems with this statement. You have no idea if they were carried out according to the letter of the law. The second problem is that the laws are often screwed up which is why we consistently see them changing.

What I ultimately have a problem with is the idea that the police or FBI can do what ever they want even if it destroys someone's life just for the chance of busting a crime. If they have reasonable suspension that Jared committed a crime? Then I absolutely see the need for the warrant to search his stuff. If they don't though, they have no right and shouldn't have been granted the search warrant.

He'll never work for Subway again
Time will tell. From a PR standpoint even if he is completely exonerated from any involvement whatsoever, I agree I don't see any way they bring him back as a pitchman. Doesn't mean they don't still pay his contract though.

Don't get me wrong. It sucks. But it's not like he's on the sex offender registry (unless they find something, then it's an entirely different discussion.)
As far as I understand it, he cooperated with a federal investigation of child pornography ring that he had accidentally hired a member of. It sucks that that might be blown up into something else, but that's not the fed's fault. Federal agents can't be held responsible for negative press their investigations cause.

If Jared's innocent, then he won't be arrested and any negative press will have been stuff the media made up for a slow news day.

If he's innocent, at some point the FBI will release some statement thanking him for his full cooperation and that will probably ease the nerves of anyone who isn't determined to believe otherwise.

I am a little curious as to why they would be searching his home though. It doesn't make much sense to me unless they suspect Jared's involvement or the guy was working out of Jared's home.
