The Chefs are getting lapped every way possible.

Fat Andy better get Jeremiah Trotter and Todd Pinkston on the line quick
No kidding. Losing Asamoah, Jackson, Schwartz and McCluster is no bueno.

Thankfully neither the Giants, Redskins or Eagles are impressive with their efforts so far.

Giants' O gets quick fix with Schwartz, Jennings

BY Ralph Vacchiano

The “broken” Giants offense got a quick fix on the first day of free agency.

Within the first 90 minutes of the open market, the Giants improved their offensive line and strengthened their running game when they agreed to terms with free agent guard Geoff Schwartz and free agent running back Rashad Jennings, according to several NFL sources. Those will be two big steps towards fixing the Giants’ greatest weaknesses when they sign their deals sometime on Wednesday.

The Giants also helped out their defense a bit by signing former Seahawks linebacker O’Brien Schofield to a two-year, $8 million contract, according to a source. He figures to take over for veteran Keith Rivers as one of the linebackers on the outside.

It was the offense, though, that seemed to command most of the Giants’ attention in the days leading up to free agency. The team had made it clear that fixing the offensive line was their No. 1 priority, and they proved it by nabbing Schwartz, a 6-6, 340-pound former Chief who was one of the top interior linemen on the market. He chose the Giants over the St. Louis Rams.

Schwartz figures to start at left guard, with Pro Bowler Chris Snee returning to play one more season at right guard. The Giants still need a center, since they will be cutting David Baas, and they have looked at free agents Evan Dietrich-Smith and Brian de la Puente. They are still talking to both, though Dietrich-Smith is expected to visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday. Re-signing veteran Kevin Boothe and shifting him to center is a possibility, too.

Whatever they do, the line in front of Eli Manning will undoubtedly now be stronger after a miserable season that saw him constantly under pressure. And the rebuilding of the line should also thrill the soon-to-be 29-year-old Jennings, who gained 733 yards in 15 games (8 starts) with the Raiders last season. He figures to take over as the No. 1 back – a role he’s never had for a full season in four years in the NFL -- and will split time either with David Wilson, if he recovers enough from neck surgery, or Peyton Hillis, who agreed to re-sign with the Giants on Tuesday for two years, $1.8 million.

And the Giants may not be done re-working their offense, either. They are still looking for a new tight end (Brandon Myers, who they had no interest in retaining, signed with Tampa Bay on Tuesday) and they’ve talked with the agents for Brandon Pettigrew, Andrew Quarless and Ed Dickson. They also need a receiver, with Hakeem Nicks unlikely to re-sign. They are scheduled to bring in receiver/kick returner Jacoby Jones in for a visit on Wednesday, according to a source. They have some interest in Packers receiver James Jones, too.

Meanwhile, the Giants didn’t neglect their defense on Day 1. The 6-3, 242-pound Schofield, a former Seahawk and Cardinal, figures to start at one of the Giants’ outside linebacker spot. The Giants also finalized a two-year, $3.1 million to retain cornerback Trumaine McBride, and were also still hopeful of re-signing linebacker Jon Beason and defensive end Justin Tuck.
