Source: Sixers in Cavs-Wolves trade

WHILE NEWS CAME out yesterday that Minnesota and Cleveland had agreed in principle to a trade that will send All-Star Kevin Love to the Cavaliers for Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and a first-round draft pick, the Daily News has learned that the Sixers will, indeed, be involved in the deal.

A source informed the Daily News that the Sixers will be sending veteran forward Thaddeus Young to Minnesota for a package that will include Bennett, the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NBA draft.

The deal, which two sources have confirmed to the Associated Press, will not be official until Aug. 23, when Wiggins, this year's No. 1 draft pick, becomes eligible to be traded.

It has been reported that Minnesota sees Young as the right guy to fill Love's shoes. The Timberwolves, it has been reported, could use the first-round pick they get from the Cavaliers to help entice the Sixers to part with the 26-year-old Young, but that has not been confirmed.

Love, 25, is coming off his best season, one in which he averaged 26.1 points, 12.5 rebounds and 4.4 assists. He can opt out of his contract next summer, and the three-time All-Star made it clear to the Timberwolves that he was looking to join a contender after missing the postseason for six seasons in Minnesota.

Young is coming off a solid year in which he averaged career-bests with 17.9 points and 2.3 assists a game. He has spent his 7-year NBA career with the Sixers after being drafted out of Georgia Tech with the 12th pick in 2007.

For now, the deal will unite Love, LeBron James and Kyrie Irving in a new-look Big 3 in Cleveland. As for the Sixers, it will give them three of the top 11 picks from the 2013 draft - Bennett, Nerlens Noel and Michael Carter-Williams.

The NBA schedule is supposed to be released this evening. 6 EST from what I've read. They're doing a show on NBA TV for those interested.

I'm planning on going to that Cavs/Heat game on Christmas day. I'm going to get me a Lebron/Cavs t-shirt and troll the Heat fan base.

Looking forward to getting Bennett...was lucky enough to be in Vegas when he was at UNLV and could really see a similarity to Melo. Not saying he is the same talent, but a slimmed down version can be a poor man's Melo IMO.

Now it looks like Bennett is not coming to the Sixers...

3:02pm: It’ll go down as a three-team deal, rather than one separate transaction involving Love and another involving Young, as Dan Barreiro of KFAN Sports Radio and Krawczynski both expect (Twitter link). Based on the most recent reports, that wound send Love to the Cavs, while the Wolves would get Young, Wiggins and Bennett, with the Sixers set to receive Mbah a Moute, Shved, and the 2015 first-round draft pick that Cleveland had acquired from the Heat.

Adding Shved and LMAM to MCW and Noel...probably a 4-5 seed now.

FIBA World Cup starts this weekend, should be some interesting games with the talent drain on Team USA.

Kyrie has looked great so far, its amazing the way he creates at the rim.

Atlanta Hawks owner, Bruce Levens, will sell the team following revelation of racist email he sent back in 2012.

C'mon, Jerry Jones, please get shit-faced and say something racist.

Subject: Re: Business/Game ops
1. from day one i have been impressed with the friendliness and professionalism of the arena staff — food vendors, ushers, ticket takers, etc. in our early years when i would bring folks from dc they were blown away by the contrast between abe pollin’s arena and philips. some of this is attributable to southern hospital and manners but bob and his staff do a good job of training. To this day, I can not get the ushers to call me Bruce yet they insist on me calling them by their first names.
2. the non-premium area food is better than most arenas, though that is not saying much. i think there is room for improvement and creativity. Levy is our food vendor so we don’t have much control but they have been good partners. i have wished we had some inconic offereing like boog’s barbeque at the baseball stadium in balt.
3. our new restaurant, red, just opened so too early for me to give you my thoughts.
4. Regarding game ops, i need to start with some background. for the first couple of years we owned the team, i didn’t much focus on game ops. then one day a light bulb went off. when digging into why our season ticket base is so small, i was told it is because we can’t get 35-55 white males and corporations to buy season tixs and they are the primary demo for season tickets around the league. when i pushed further, folks generally shrugged their shoulders. then i start looking around our arena during games and notice the following:
— it’s 70 pct black
— the cheerleaders are black
— the music is hip hop
— at the bars it’s 90 pct black
— there are few fathers and sons at the games
— we are doing after game concerts to attract more fans and the concerts are either hip hop or gospel.
Then i start looking around at other arenas. It is completely different. Even DC with its affluent black community never has more than 15 pct black audience.
Before we bought the hawks and for those couple years immediately after in an effort to make the arena look full (at the nba’s urging) thousands and thousands of tickets were being giving away, predominantly in the black community, adding to the overwhelming black audience.
My theory is that the black crowd scared away the whites and there are simply not enough affluent black fans to build a signficant season ticket base. Please dont get me wrong. There was nothing threatening going on in the arean back then. i never felt uncomfortable, but i think southern whites simply were not comfortable being in an arena or at a bar where they were in the minority. On fan sites i would read comments about how dangerous it is around philips yet in our 9 years, i don’t know of a mugging or even a pick pocket incident. This was just racist garbage. When I hear some people saying the arena is in the wrong place I think it is code for there are too many blacks at the games.
I have been open with our executive team about these concerns. I have told them I want some white cheerleaders and while i don’t care what the color of the artist is, i want the music to be music familiar to a 40 year old white guy if that’s our season tixs demo. i have also balked when every fan picked out of crowd to shoot shots in some time out contest is black. I have even bitched that the kiss cam is too black.
Gradually things have changed. My unscientific guess is that our crowd is 40 pct black now, still four to five times all other teams. And my further guess is that 40 pct still feels like 70 pet to some whites at our games. Our bars are still overwhelmingly black.
This is obviously a sensitive topic, but sadly i think it is far and way the number one reason our season ticket base is so low.
And many of our black fans don’t have the spendable income which explains why our f&b and merchandise sales are so low. At all white thrasher games sales were nearly triple what they are at hawks games (the extra intermission explains some of that but not all).
Regardless of what time a game starts, we have the latest arriving crowd in the league. It often looks and sounds empty when the team takes the floor.
In the past two years, we have created a section of rowdy college students that has been a big plus. And we do a lot of very clever stuff during time outs to entertain the crowd. Our kiss cam is better done than any in the league.
We have all the same halftime acts that other arenas have but i question whether they make sense. people are on their cell phones during half time. i wonder if flashing on the scoreboard “$2 off on hot dogs during halftime tonight” just as the half ends would be a better use of our halftime dollars and make the fans happier.
We do all the usual giveways and the fans are usually their loudest when our spirit crew takes the floor to give away t-shirts. It pisses me off that they will yell louder for a t-shirt then for our players.
Our player intro is flat. We manufacture a lot of noise but because of the late arriving crowd and the fact that a lot of blacks dont seem to go as crazy cheering (another one of my theories) as whites, it is not great. Even when we have just returned from winnng four straight on the road, i am one of the few people in the arena standing and cheering when our team takes the floor. Bob has kicked around ideas like having the starters coming down aisles rather than off the bench during intros. Sounds cool but may highlight all the empty seats at the start of games.
Not enough of our fans wear hawks jerseys to games. i have just begun to push for ideas like discount food lines for folks wearing jerseys, special entrances, etc. I think we need a committed and perhaps incentivized fan club. We need to realize atl is simply different than every other city. Just adopting nba best practices is not enough. we have to create our own.
I am rambling and could probably go on forever. If you have any specific areas you would like my thoughts on, let me know.
Best,
Bruce
ps — I have cc’d todd and ed so they can chime in with additional or different thoughts.

After reading the email, I don't think this was bad. To me he's just discussing target marketing.

I've never worked in marketing but I assume similar conversations go on to target certain demographics.

I don't think this would have caused much of a stir. I wonder if he saw the money Sterling got and thought he could get a ton for the Hawks. Not a billion, but close to it. I don't know. Just a wild thought.

I don't see the big deal either, and the same thought crossed my mind. It's near the line, but it seems more like a poorly worded email discussing demographics than than racism to me.

Yeah, he didn't say anything bad about the black fans, though I only skimmed the email. Like 1big said, he just seemed to want to target a segment of the fan base that wasn't coming to the games.

Rose has looked pretty bad in these Fiba games, I thought it was just jitters at first but he does not have that extra juice to finish in traffic like he used to.

I think he will look better once his role is more defined, but I don't think he is that difference maker anymore and I don't see him ever being a complementary pg.

I don't know what kind of player you get if can't dominate play with his physical ability.

Rose looks fine to me physically, he basically looks exactly the same as he did early on in the season last year when he was shooting something ridiculous like 30%, explosive but with no touch or feel for the game. I think he basically has to rebuild his basketball instincts and get used to doing things at real game speed, everything he does is just off.

I mean, the dude has been doing completely dumb shit like dribbling the ball off his leg out of bounds when he isn't even under heavy pressure, it's not like tearing his ACL made him forget how to dribble a ball, he's just not used to playing basketball at the highest level.

I think I said this a while back but I don't think Rose will be fully back until about February or so.

There isn't anything too bad in that email but I'm guessing the dude just doesn't care enough or want to deal with the potential shitstorm this could bring. Pretty amazing that someone would sit down, write out all those thoughts in an email and then hit send, maybe just have a conference call next time?

I would tell the PR director what I wanted in private and let him/her deal with trying to attract more wealthy white customers. Makes no sense to let a potentially damaging email be out there.

Yea, just seems like amateur hour.

On the other hand I guess the guy is worth hundreds of millions and probably didn't really give much of a shit if an email of his could be traced by whoever.

If you make your millions outside of the public eye it's probably easy to fail to realize how vulnerable, comparatively, sports and entertainment is to public pressure.
