FRISCO, Texas -- Needing a roster spot for offensive tackle Emmett Cleary, the Dallas Cowboys placed rookie defensive end Charles Tapper on injured reserve because of a back injury.
Early in training camp Tapper, a fourth-round pick the Cowboys hoped would help their pass-rush, was diagnosed with a Pars Defect, which had gone undetected since birth. He returned to the practice field last week but suffered a setback, so the Cowboys have opted to place him on injured reserve.
He will miss at least the next eight weeks if not the rest of the season. If he does not play this year, he will be the second Cowboys draft pick to not play as a rookie along with second rounder Jaylon Smith, who is recovering from a serious knee injury suffered last January at Notre Dame.
On Tuesday, Tapper expressed hope that a recent injection would help alleviate the pain and allow him to practice.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys released defensive end Chris McCain from the practice squad and signed offensive tackle Clay DeBord. The Cowboys also recently added center Shane McDermott to the practice squad after Jake Brendel suffered an injury.
