Cowboys Sign WR To Practice Squad, Release FB Whitlock

IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys signed one of Monday’s workout players, wide receiver Reggie Dunn, to their practice squad on Tuesday afternoon. They released fullback Nikita Whitlock from the practice squad to make a roster spot.

This will be Dunn’s seventh NFL team since he went undrafted out of Utah last year. The Steelers signed him to their roster following the 2013 NFL Draft, and he spent time on the practice squads of the Packers, Browns, Dolphins, and Patriots last season. The Arizona Cardinals signed him this past summer, and they released him during roster cuts at the end of training camp.

The addition of Dunn gives the Cowboys two wide receivers on their practice squad, along with mainstay Tim Benford. Dunn should give the starters some impressive speed to work against, as he is an NCAA record holder in several return game categories.

While at Utah, Dunn was named a first-team All-Pac 12 specialist for his abilities as a returner. He set the NCAA record for

career 100-yard kick return touchdowns with five. Four of those came during the 2012 season, an NCAA single-season record. During that 2012 effort, Dunn also returned two kickoffs 100 yards for touchdowns in a game against California – another NCAA record.

Whitlock was a prolific defensive tackle for both Wylie High School and Wake Forest, but his size limitations prompted the Bengals to try him at fullback during the offseason. Cincinnati waived him during final roster cuts, and the Cowboys added him to their practice squad last week.

The Cowboys also worked out receiver Devon Wylie and safety Keelan Johnson on Monday, but they did not sign them.

More then we need a second FB. I'd prefer to just continually rotate any position on the practice squad in an attempt to find the most talented players available.

But, a lot less than we need safeties, or DL, or LBers. Or even CBers if we are honest with ourselves.

If it was the active roster you'd have a really good point. When you're talking about the practice squad you're talking about guys who probably won't play a down in the NFL this year and are long shots to ever have an impact in the NFL.
