Report: Tavon Austin could miss two weeks with MCL sprain

Posted by Mike Wilkening on September 15, 2014, 4:48 PM EDT

The Rams could be without Tavon Austin for the rest of September.

The good news? It’s possible he may miss just one game.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports Austin, the Rams’ 2013 first-round pick, is expected to miss “roughly two weeks” with a sprained MCL suffered in Sunday’s win at Tampa Bay.

The Rams have their bye in Week Four (Sept. 28). In short, if Austin misses just two weeks, the Rams might be without him for just one game. So while this is unwelcome news, the timing couldn’t be much better for St. Louis.

Austin (three catches, 34 yards; five rushes, 26 yards in 2014) is one of the Rams’ primary wide receivers and their top punt returner. Austin Pettis, who made a key 27-yard catch late in the Rams’ 19-17 victory against the Bucs, is listed as the top backup to Tavon Austin both at receiver and on punts.

Whoa.... boozeman is in full homer mode. We already have a Rams stuff thread.

Last week we barely had a Titans stuff thread.

That win has you feeling good, huh, Booze?

I have to admit it, shamefully...yes.

Our defense has no excuse not to continue their better-than-expected play this week. The Rams are down to their 3rd QB (though Hill might be back for this game), they haven't been able to run the ball well, and now their big play threat in Austin is out. They're also not good against the run (gave up 145 yards to Bobby Rainey yesterday), so a similar game plan as yesterday should be enough to win. Let's see if Garrett can actually stick with the run.

Bobby Rainey, yeah, that guy, ran for 144 behind a very patchwork OL for the Bucs.

Feeling pretty good about Murray's chances.

Therein lies the problem.

The Film Don't Lie: Rams

September, 15, 2014

A weekly look at what the St. Louis Rams must fix:

We talked about penalties last week and they remain a problem as the Rams return home to take on the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3, but there's another issue the Rams had better rectify in a hurry before the Cowboys come calling.

St. Louis allowed Tampa Bay to put up 157 yards on 30 rushes in Sunday's 19-17 win, including 144 from little-known back Bobby Rainey. Through two games, the Rams are allowing 5.52 yards per carry and 171 yards per game on the ground, which is 30th in the NFL through Monday afternoon.

The Rams are springing leaks at all levels against the run right now with poor run fits and tackling at the heart of the matter. Pro Football Focus had the Rams down for eight missed tackles against Tampa Bay, which was an improvement over the 18 from Week 1, but still not enough to slow Rainey & Co.

Those numbers surely have Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray salivating. He has rushed for 428 yards and scored two touchdowns against the Rams in two career matchups, including a 253-yard outburst in 2011.

=================================

I have a terrible feeling that Dallas decides to sling it 40 times against the Rams.

They suck at run defense and Murray's leading the league.

Everyone knows we should run.

Time to outsmart the world, eh Garrett?

You do know his Lions last year threw more than the Cowboys?
That was last year and that was Detroit. He had to know before he came to Dallas that the entire world thought Dallas should tun the ball more.

I think that's going to be the assumption from everyone until they actually prove that they have turned over a new leaf.

The defensive coaches have to tell the offensive coaches to
1) go suck a cock
2) run the damned football

Joe Gibbs made that adjustment at halftime of Superbowl 17 (the second one, and maybe the first) and never looked back, riding that formula to three titles.

Garrett wants to have even a chance at a Lombardi in what we're all seeing as a seriously watered-down league, he must stick with what's working. Only injury or his own dumb-assed playcalls can get in his way of having a solid season.

It's a safe assumption because there are too many instances of the Cowboys' offense as a whole going away from the run when our RBs are averaging around 5 ypc.

Also, it won't matter who's calling the plays if no one is willing to step up and reign in Romo.

Could the Rams have actually over did it with pass rushers on their DL at the expense of run stopping ability?

Look, I want to homer out as bad as the next guy, but we won't be getting the special brand of offensively-challenged football that Jake Locker brings to the table every week. It's one thing to turn over a new leaf and run the ball when you're up 16-0 at half. Given our track record under Garrett, I have no choice but to grudgingly concede that it is, and that it would have meant at least 2 more wins (and the playoffs) last year. However, we'll see how much we've changed when we face a double-digit deficit, and with this defense, it's coming.

Send Jason a copy of the 1999 game at the slurs where we were down 35-14 in the 4th quarter, but didn't stop running Emmitt, ultimately winning in OT on a play-action pass. Learn that.
