Great.

Sounds like what happened to Lawrence his rookie year though and he was able to come back and contribute for half the season. Even if he's out 12 weeks he should be able to play in the last preseason game and get some practice in before the regular season.

So much for the moving Crawford to end thing.

The sad thing is we need him early in the year more then anything. Our D-line is already thin for those first 4 games.

The one positive is that he did it now and not during training camp. His foot should be fully healed before the season starts. But with him being a rookie it hurts that he will basically miss training camp. That's when guys like this learn and prove themselves.

Doubt it. Even if he is, he'll have missed all of training camp. He'll provide no impact this year. But watch out in 2017!! Redshirt season.
Lawrence had the same injury during training camp and came back to have 2 sacks in the playoffs. Similar injury but he will be healthy for the start of the season as opposed to week 10 of the season like Lawrence. But go ahead, continue with the trolling.

Yea, exactly.

Unless he re-injures himself I see no reason why the expectation of him being a rotational interior pass-rusher this year should change. He may start slow and not round into form until a month or two into the season but right now 10 weeks puts him at about August 5th and 12 weeks puts him at about August 19th (he supposedly had surgery late last week so I'm using last Friday as the start date).

That'd have him back somewhere in the middle to back end of camp with at least a game or two left in the preseason. Considering that Lawrence missed all of camp, preseason and half the regular season and still came back to give us something late in the year/in the playoffs, I think it's very reasonable to assume this guy can give us something assuming he comes back sometime in mid to late August.

Maliek Collins' injury came at right and wrong time for Cowboys

IRVING, Texas – A protective boot was spotted next to Maliek Collins' locker on Wednesday, an ode to the surgery he had last week on his broken right foot.

There are two ways to look Collins’ injury. The timing of it is right because he should be back by the time the regular season begins, or the time off will increase the difficulty in picking up what the Dallas Cowboys want him to do.

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli likes both views.

“It does set you back, but if it had to happen at a certain time, it’s better it happened now,” Marinelli said. “He’s s hard-nosed guy, good attitude with him. He’s tough. He’ll bounce back fast I think.”

Collins is looking at a 10- to 12-week recovery period. He suffered the same break Dez Bryant had last season.

In the last two years, the Cowboys have seen injuries take away what they had hoped would be big-time contributors to their defensive line as rookies. In 2014, DeMarcus Lawrence suffered a broken foot in training camp and missed the first seven regular season games. In 2015, Randy Gregory suffered a high ankle sprain in the season opener and missed a month.

Neither had a sack in the regular season as a rookie.

After selecting Collins in the third round they expressed the possibility of moving Tyrone Crawford to defensive end with the suspension to Gregory and looming penalty that faces Lawrence. Crawford has not taken any snaps at end so far in the offseason, but that could change in camp.

Marinelli likes what he has on the interior in Tyrone Crawford, Cedric Thornton, Terrell McClain and Jack Crawford. Undrafted rookie Rodney Coe also has drawn praise.

At the moment, the Cowboys don’t plan on looking for added help on the defensive line.

“We have a lot of defensive linemen on our team right now, so it gives some of the younger guys and even the veteran guys more snaps,” coach Jason Garrett said. “Maliek was doing well for us. He was off to a good start. We do anticipate him being back healthy and ready to go.”

They're still working on Dez now 9 months after his injury. Haven't we learned our lesson?

IR this kid and let him rehab.

Sometimes you make really good points, sometimes you make horrific over-exaggerations based on singular incidents that make you seem insane.

This is the latter.

You realize you just did that very thing. :)

Julio Jones, who had a similar injury, advised Dez to take the season off. He didn't and is still rehabbing his foot now nine months later.

Think about it, his recovery time is 4 months which puts him at the season start. No TC, no practice, no nothing. That's a recipe for re-injury if there ever was one. Especially for an interior lineman who puts a lot of pressure on his feet. Collins needs to fully heal and be PUPed at the very least.

PUP buys him another six weeks, which could work since he could practice with the team at least a few weeks earlier and we could still put him on IR if need be.

Dez tried to play after what like 6 weeks? We rushed him back and he required a second surgery as a result. Collins on the other hand has the luxury of being able to take the full 10-12 week recovery time. Do you know why they say 10-12 week recovery time? Because that's how long it should take to heal from the injury. If it was a 18 month injury like you suggest, the recovery time would be 18 months not 10-12 weeks.

C-rock basically said what I wanted to say but where did you get 4 months from?

10-12 weeks is 2.5-3 months, the 12 week mark is the middle of August where he'd still have almost a month before the first regular season game. Using Dez as a baseline is ridiculous because of how he rushed himself back and played at less than 100% for months.

PUP may be justified at some point but to put a guy on IR in June with an injury that takes 10-12 weeks to heal is madness.
