Jakar Hamilton's suspension ends
September, 29, 2014
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com
IRVING, Texas – Dallas Cowboys safety Jakar Hamilton can return to meetings and practice this week now that his four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy is over.
Hamilton said his suspension came about because he failed to show up for a test, not for failing a test. In the policy, a missed test is considered the same as failing a test. Under terms of the substance abuse policy, Hamilton was allowed to work out at the Cowboys’ Valley Ranch facility, but he could not attend meetings, practices or games.
The Cowboys will have a one-week roster exemption. If they choose to activate him for this week’s game against the Houston Texans, they would have to make room on the 53-man roster.
Hamilton had a solid training camp but a concussion kept him out of the first preseason game and a hamstring strain kept him out of the final preseason game. Signed as an undrafted free agent, Hamilton spent two months on the practice squad last year and played in three regular-season games. He was credited with three special teams’ tackles.
Defensive tackle Josh Brent is also eligible to return to work Monday after the NFL modified his suspension. Brent can work out and take part in meetings, but he cannot begin practicing with the team until Week 9. The first game in which he can play is Nov. 23 against the New York Giants.
