HOUSTON -- Case Keenum will start for the Texans on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak announced his decision after ruling out Matt Schaub, who is recovering from an ankle and foot injury.

"We're struggling and we're looking for a spark," Kubiak said, adding that Keenum deserves the chance.

Keenum began the season as the Texans' third-string quarterback. He's been inactive for the first six games of the season and Texans backup T.J. Yates went into last Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams after Schaub suffered his injury.

Case Keenum, who began the season as the Texans' third-string quarterback and was inactive the first six games, will start at quarterback Sunday.
Yates, who is in his third year with the Texans, threw two interceptions against the Rams and one of them was returned 98 yards for a touchdown. It was the Texans' fifth consecutive game with a pick-six. Schaub had thrown one in each of the previous four games.

Kubiak told Keenum of his decision Thursday morning, then announced the change to the team before practice.

"His eyes got kind of big," Kubiak said. "He's excited. He's a competitor. He's a very confident young man. Went out there today, I thought he practiced very well. He's been in big games, a lot on his shoulders. It's a tremendous opportunity. That's what you work for as a kid. ... We're excited for him."

Keenum spent last season on the Texans' practice squad after a record-setting career at the University of Houston.

"It reminds me a little bit of Tony Romo's story. Hopefully it ends out that way," Texans defensive coordinator and former Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said. "He's got some moxie. That's what Romo has."

Weird that they are backing Keenum over Yates, even if Yates did have a pick six against the Rams.
