Garrett says Cowboys put 'a lot of analysis' over last six months into improving running game

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the team did “a lot of analysis” into why the running game was so bad last year, and they think they have come up with a plan to make it better.

First, get better players. Second, run the ball more.

“It’s personnel, it’s execution, it’s a combination of scheme – we need to run the ball more – all of those things,” Garrett said Saturday in the opening press conference at training camp in Oxnard. “We know that. We’ve done a lot of analysis on it in the last six months. We feel like we have a good plan going forward.”

Garrett said drafting new center Travis Frederick was part of the plan.

“Hopefully you feel like you’re bettering all parts of the offensive line, and the impact in the running game should follow that,” Garrett said.

Garrett said no one underestimates the positives of a good running game.

“When you run the ball well, so many things open up for you,” he said. “It’s amazing how, when you run the ball well, the opportunities to throw the ball well present themselves and the opportunities to play better defense present themselves. You’re better in the red zone. You tend to take care of the ball better. All of those things. We understand that, and we made a huge emphasis on it in the off-season.”

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett: ‘We need to run the ball better and we need to run the ball more’

OXNARD, Calif. – Jason Garrett was emphatic Saturday when discussing the state of the Cowboys’ woeful ground game and the concerted effort the organization has made to improve it.

“We need to run the ball better and we need to run the ball more,” Garrett said. “And it’s going to help our team.”

Last season, the Cowboys’ rushing offense was historically unproductive, generating 1,265 yards, the lowest total ever accumulated during a 16-game season in franchise history. The Cowboys’ commitment to the ground attack was open to question considering that only one NFL team – Detroit — ran the ball at lower frequency last season than Dallas did.

But Garrett said the Cowboys are determined to take a different approach, hoping to transform a weak area into a strong point.

“When you run the ball well, so many things open up for you,” Garrett said. “It’s amazing how when you run the ball well, the opportunities to throw the ball well present themselves and the opportunities to play better defense present themselves.

“You’re better in the red zone, you tend to take care of the ball better, all of those things. We understand that and we made a huge emphasis on it in the off-season. And we will continue to make that emphasis here in training camp. Again, the impact of the running game on your football team is significant. We’ve just got to do it better and there will be a huge focus on it really every day in camp.”
