Although Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stands behind his moral victory comments he made after the Week 5 loss to the Denver Broncos, he noted Wednesday that he wanted to say it differently as his team heads into a Sunday night game against the Washington Redskins.
Coach Jason Garrett and team executive vice president Stephen Jones had offered an opposing view on the moral victory comments earlier this week.
"We certainly need this win in our record," Jones said on KRLD-FM, referring to the Redskins game. "The last two [losses] are gonna be a real challenge for us to overcome of having at least one win of these last three [losses]. But the promise of things to come was brighter when [the Broncos] game was finished the other day than when it started and the promise was because we started see a lot coming together there with our offense with Tony [Romo]."
Romo who threw for 506 yards and five touchdowns in the loss. It was the quarterback's fourth-quarter interception that gave the Broncos the ball with about 2 minutes to play, which eventually led to a game-winning field goal.
Romo has been criticized for his late-game failures as he's 1-6 in win-or-go-home games in his career. His 18 fourth-quarter comebacks and 19 game-winning drives get overshadowed by his gunslinger mentality and failures to close some games out.
Jones wouldn't change a thing about Romo and still believes he's the man to lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl.
"I would say that Tony gives us the best chance and although we haven't gotten there, that's the way he is," Jones said. "Then that gives the Cowboys the best chance to get to a Super Bowl and at the end of the day that's what it is. Coming up short, second or third doesn't count, everybody is aware that we all getting the same talent pool and you can't have it all."
