Jerry Jones: Sean Lee deal at top of to-do list

August, 15, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. – Sean Lee is entering the final year of his rookie contract, but Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones intends to make Lee a long-term solution on the defense.

The Cowboys and Lee’s agent have had some talks during the offseason but Jones would not characterize how far down the road they are in those discussions other to say that Lee is at the top of the list of players the team wants to re-sign.

“When we look at things we need to do short- and long-term, he’s on that list,” Jones said. “His agreement is on that list. That would be the best way to say it. Those things have to fit. In terms of our planning and management of our cap dollars and our future, we’re planning on having him on the team. We do plan on it and we factor it in when we look at what we have to spend next year.”

Lee is set to make $630,000 this year and count $930,000 against the cap. The Cowboys are close to $10 million under the cap and have the room to sign Lee to an extension, but Jones also said the team will be tight against the cap in 2014.
-----------

While I heart Sean Lee, I can so see us signing him to a lucrative new deal and the guy's knees spontaneously combust on field the very next game.

For once can a guy not named Ware, Witten, or Romo play 16 games at a high level, two seasons in a row before we sign him to a ginormous deal?

No. Deal with it.

It is what we do.

Wait, that guy can play. Lock him up, because we can't draft worth a shit and we better take whatever luck we get in the process.

.
No kidding. Currently over the cap might be more accurate.

We may need to carry that ten million, or eight if Waters signs for two mil, into next year just to be able to do business.

We should be able to get rid of Free and Ratliff two years too late in 2014 as well.

No.

There have been many message board posters that say the salary cap is not a problem.

Oh, you can get under with a few restructures. The problem is that you continue to kick money into future years. You're essentially chaining yourself to Romo and Ware until the fall apart. One they retire, there isn't avoiding that charge you keep kicking down the road. You could probably get 8-10 million out of Romo alone in a restructure. I just get nervous about converting $10 million or so into bonus and spreading over 4 years for a guy that'll be 34 to start the year next year.

You can save $2 million by cutting Livings. $1.5 to cut Bernie. $1.3 savings on Rat. Could save $4 million on Austin if you designate him a June 1.

Do all that stuff you're close to the cap. Restructure Ware and Carr and include your rollover from this year and you'll be a few million under. But, it'll be like this year where they did little in FA and restructure about everyone that they can.

However, you still have Lee to take care of this year. Dez next year, Smith the year after. Hatcher is a FA as is Spencer and you've just cut your starting DT and two guards on a mess of a line.

I do think a lot of people don't understand the salary cap. Including GMs and so called experts. For example a lot of experts will tell you that Dallas shouldn't cut Livings right now because we wouldn't gain any cap room. This is a total fallacy. You absolutely save money. It might not show up in the cap this year but it will show up in the cap next year and the year after. You save the base salary you would have to pay him this year and that savings does ultimately show up in your cap.

The problem is GM's like Jerry are too stupid or ignorant to realize this type of thing.
