Garrett agrees Escobar hasn't made big impact, but promises to keep giving him chances

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett agrees tight end Gavin Escobar has not made a big impact, but promises to keep giving him chances.

“When he’s gotten chances, if you remember the catches he’s made, they’ve been really impressive catches for a young guy,” Garrett said. “Has he come in and made a huge impact on our football team to this point? No. But we feel really good about him, and hopefully he’ll continue to make progress and have an impact on our team.”

Escobar has four catches for 65 yards, a 16.3 average with a long of 25, and one touchdown. He has played in 21.5 percent of the snaps this year.

Garrett, asked to assess Escobar’s performance, talked about him more like a fifth- or sixth-round pick than a second-rounder expected to contribute in the Cowboys’ once-planned two-tight-end system.

“We felt like when we drafted Escobar that he was a receiver, a receiving tight end first, and he had to grow into being more of a traditional ‘Y’ tight end, a guy who can put his hand on the ground and block like a traditional tight end would. And he’s still going through that process,” Garrett said. “He’s been a part of some of the stuff we’ve done. Other guys have emerged as well – Dez Bryant is a marquee player, Witt’s obviously a marquee player, Cole Beasley’s done a nice job for us. So you go into ballgames, and sometimes you migrate to some of the other things that have been good to you.

“We’ll keep giving him chances. He’s growing and developing before our eyes. He’s getting better and better and better.”

Except for all the ways he's not, other than that, great point.
When it comes to spinning positive about bad players.... he is identical in that regard.

He did it with Arkin and he is doing it for this fool.

He just said he hasn't made a big impact. You would very, very rarely have seen Wade say anything except everything is exactly how they want it.

It might be more sunshine pumping than you want but it's not identical.

Either way, he's still not a carbon copy of Wade Phillips, because he does a lot of other things differently, such as the recent benchings of starters that everyone apparently already forgot about.

So we use a 2nd rounder on a one dimensional TE... Brilliant.
Maybe next year we can use our 2nd on a TE that can put his hand on the ground and block. Yippee.

Wade benched Leonard Davis in 2010 (until Holland got poked in the eye).

That's one benching per coach, so they are even. Garrett was still too much of a pussy to bench Barber even though Barber was playing horrible AND being a pain in the ass.

Except it's not one benching per coach, Garrett benched Carter, Garrett benched Murray for a short period of time in the preseason for fumbling, Garrett outright took away the starting job from Will Allen and released him, etc. One of the biggest complaints was how veterans never lost their jobs or even got challenged under Wade, so you are flat out telling lies basically.

On top of that, the roster churning has picked up exponentially under Garrett, whereas Wade never wanted to cut anyone since it would interfere with his "the team is a family" message bullshit, Garrett has actually gotten Jerry to slightly invest in the OL in recent years, etc.

Anywho.... they're not really that alike, coaching style wise. The results haven't been good enough under Garrett, but just say that and be done with it instead of fabricating things.

I actually think this very article is proof.... as if Wade ever would have said that they weren't getting enough from one of his guys. Escobar was a Garrett hand picked player and he is kinda calling him out here.
