Cowboys signed Everett Dawkins off of Minny's PS to the active roster and added DE Hall Davis to fill out our PS.

Seem like classically decent churns.

NFL.com Draft Analysis
Everett Dawkins

Strengths

Quick, penetrating defensive tackle with an explosive first step. Good hustle as a pass rusher, trying to shed even when his initial move doesn’t work. Low center of gravity helps him get under the pads of blockers to push them into the backfield. His quick feet give him the first step to be effective and the agility to burst past his man and adjust to mobile quarterbacks trying to avoid him within the pocket. Slippery, and has a nice inside swim and outside rip move. Active in pursuit from the backside. Feels pressure well, and re-directs when his initial stunt takes him away from the ball.

Weaknesses

Plays a bit out of control at times, getting into the body of his opponent and getting taken out of plays, or ending up on the ground when trying to out-quick his man. Does not have elite size or strength to get through better linemen once they are anchored – which could also cause him issues standing up to NFL offensive linemen on a down-by-down basis as a starter. Poor pad level prevents him from being able to get under offensive lineman’s pads. Does a good job re-directing with his spin move, but gets overly reliant on it once its successful. Gets overpowered often at the point of attack and pad level causes him to struggle against base blocks and double teams.

NFL Comparison
Derek Landri

Bottom Line

An active interior presence who didn’t rack up huge numbers due to Florida State’s constant defensive line rotation (4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks over the last two years) but possesses the quick first step and hands to be a thorn in the side of NFL offensive lines. If a coach can work on his pad level and improve his ability to anchor, he might have potential as a starter down the line. He projects to be a Day 3 draft pick.

I will wait for Bob Roberts' ayuh or feh.

Dawkins was listed as a third rounder on our leaked Jerry board this past April too.

Dawkins is supposed to have a great first step.

Where's the resident FSU expert?

ANALYSIS
Positives: Thick, compact frame with flexible lower half. Gets a good jump and exhibits an explosive first step off the snap. Does a good job of maintaining low leverage on contact. Exhibits good bend in his lower half when asked to hold position at the point of attack. Consistently gets his hands into his opponent's frame. Flashes quick hands and a nice swim move to bypass his blocker to either side. Impressive agility and break down ability for his size. Above-average closing burst in space. Displays solid backfield vision and awareness as a run defender. Hip flexibility to effectively dip and turn the corner on stunts to the outside.

Negatives: May be considered somewhat undersized for the position. Lacks ideal arm length, and is locked up often as a result. Doesn't rip or swim as much as he should when considering his plus hand quickness and lack of length. Struggles to disengage when attempting to close running lanes from his anchor. Hand power is marginal at best, as he appears to "bounce" off his opponent at times when initiating contact off the snap. Resorts more to the bull rush than he should, as he lacks the natural power to consistently drive opponents off the block.

Compares to: Greg Scruggs, DT, Seattle Seahawks - Like Scruggs, Dawkins possesses explosiveness and athleticism that could make him a feared interior rusher at the next level. However, to be a more consistent threat to quarterbacks, he'll need to become more active with his hands, and continue to develop a repertoire of counter-moves that utilize his "plus" athleticism and quickness.

Boberts' opinion is okay but I'm waiting on Broaddus' assessment.

I always feel better about these signings after Broaddus explains how we just picked up a potential 20 sack guy off the street.

I can't wait to read how this guy has the quickest first step since Warren Sapp.

D-line is the only part of the team I have faith in churning right now.

God I wish we could find a Rod Marinelli equivalent for the offensive line, he is working wonders for the front seven on defense. The production he is getting from guys off the street is incredible.

Scouting Report: Evaluating Tape Of DT Everett Dawkins

Posted 7 hours ago

Bryan Broaddus Football Analyst/Scout

Everett Dawkins - Defensive Tackle - Florida State - Rookie

6-2 292 - 5.01 40 Yard Dash

Games Viewed: Minnesota Vikings preseason 2013: Houston, Buffalo and San Francisco

•Dawkins was drafted by the Vikings in the seventh round, 229th overall. He was evaluated by the Cowboys as having third round ability and sat in that round on their draft board.

•He can play at either the one or three technique. The majority of his snaps were taken at the three.

•Shows some initial quickness off the snap to get into blocker, but needs to do a better job of taking advantage of that quickness to finish the play.

•He will use his hands to control the blockers; very active with his hands but needs to do a better job of getting rid of blockers quicker. There are plays where he gets tied up and it affects the way he gets to the play.

•He is willing work down the line -- showed some nimble feet and foot work. Able to avoid blockers that would go low on him. Kept his feet active.

•Tends to play high, did not see much lower body power. Did not anchor down as well as he needed to. Was handled one-on-one. Knocked back and was pinned a couple of plays. Thought he could have done a better job of getting push. Can get a better rush when he is on the move.

•Thought he could have done a better job of redirecting once he read the play. Some plays where the ball was able to get past him because he wasn’t able to work back to it.

•Chased the ball better in the Buffalo and San Francisco games, but thought I would see more of a “Bust Ass” type of defensive linemen that you usually get with Florida State kids. Needs to find a way to finish plays better. Not in enough piles for me right now. Found myself wanting him to make more plays because of his background but just didn’t show that fire.

There are some physical traits with the hand use and feet to work with, but he needs that spark.
