Jets hope Saints will take a late-round pick for Chris Ivory

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 13, 2013, 12:38 PM EDT

The Saints put a second-round tender on restricted free agent running back Chris Ivory, but the Jets are hoping to get him from New Orleans for less than that.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Ivory visited the Jets’ facility on Friday, and the Jets are interested in acquiring him. However, they are not interested in giving up their second-round draft pick, No. 39 overall, to get him. So the Jets won’t be signing Ivory to a restricted free agent offer sheet.

Instead, the Jets are hoping that they can both agree to a contract with Ivory and agree to terms with the Saints on a trade that would bring Ivory to New York for a late-round pick.

Ivory has played well in limited action since joining the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2010. In three years he has played in 24 games with 10 starts, carrying 256 times for 1,307 yards (a 5.1-yard average) and eight touchdowns. With the Saints he has struggled to get consistent playing time in a crowded backfield that also includes Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles and Mark Ingram. But with the Jets he’d have a chance of earning the starting job in a backfield that currently consists of Bilal Powell, Mike Goodson and Joe McKnight.
---------------

This would be a good pickup for a mid-round pick.

He was the only one in FA in whom I was interested.

Bears sign Eben Britton

Posted by Josh Alper on April 16, 2013, 6:18 PM EDT

So much for Eben Britton’s visit with the Seahawks.

The former Jaguars second-round pick worked out for Seattle recently, but he’s landed a contract with a different NFC team. The Bears announced Tuesday that they have signed Britton to a one-year deal.

Britton started five games at left guard for the Jaguars in 2012, but finished the season on the bench in favor of the undrafted rookie Mike Brewster. Britton began his stint in Jacksonville as a right tackle, but was kicked inside after injuries and ineffectiveness forced him out of that role.

While discussing Bears quarterback Jay Cutler a short time ago, we made reference to the competition going on for several offensive line spots in Chicago. The Bears refer to Britton as a guard and tackle in their release about his signing, which means he could wind up fitting in any of three spots with the Bears. Coach Marc Trestman said Tuesday that the team is mostly looking at Gabe Carimi as a guard, which would put him into a mix with Matt Slauson and James Brown while J’Marcus Webb and Jonathan Scott compete at right tackle.

Britton could wind up in either pot as the Bears continue to pile up options they hope will lead to a more effective unit than they’ve had in recent years.

Dammit. I was hoping they wouldn't and put a WR higher in the mix.
They have to think ahead though...from the sounds of it this is his last year there, so unless they want to gamble on a WR next year they might want to get one this year.

Ravens signed Rolando McClain. He was a guy I would have liked to get in on.
New Raven Rolando McClain arrested for disorderly conduct

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 22, 2013, 6:00 AM EDT

Rolando McClain’s career with the Raiders fell apart in large part because of his inability to stay out of trouble off the field. Now his time with the Ravens is off to a bad start.

McClain, the linebacker who signed with the Ravens this month after being cut by the Raiders, was arrested on Sunday night in his hometown of Decatur, Alabama.

WHNT reports that McClain was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after an incident at a local park. Witnesses said they saw McClain cursing at police officers before he was handcuffed and taken away.

McClain’s previous arrests have included everything from assault to driving with windows that were tinted too darkly.

The 23-year-old McClain was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft and was the Raiders’ starting middle linebacker for most of his three seasons in Oakland. But his talent may not be enough to outweigh his off-field troubles, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Ravens cut him.

Felix Jones visiting Patriots

Posted by Mike Wilkening on May 8, 2013, 8:06 PM EDT

Add the Patriots to the list of teams who have shown enough interest in Felix Jones to bring him in for a visit.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Patriots are hosting the running back on Wednesday and Thursday.

The 26-year-old Jones, an unrestricted free agent who spent the previous five seasons in Dallas, visited the Eagles on Tuesday and worked out for the Bengals in April.

The Patriots have the makings of solid depth at running back with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden, LeGarrette Blount and Leon Washington among their options at the position. However, the 5-10, 215-pound Jones has good speed and has shown some pass-catching ability on the pro level; he hauled in a career-best 48 receptions in 2010 for Dallas, with whom he has played his entire career.

In 2012, Jones rushed for 402 yards and three touchdowns on 111 attempts and caught 25 passes for 262 yards and two TDs. He gained just 3.6 yards per carry a season ago, a career-low. However, he’s rushed for 4.8 yards per attempt since entering the NFL in 2008.
------------

You can always see when a guy becomes a WGAS player when they visit places they don't have a chance to be more than third string.

Damn, whotta bust.

Patriots reach deal with ex-Titans WR Lavelle Hawkins

Posted by Mike Wilkening on May 9, 2013, 12:24 PM EDT

Ex-Titans wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins has come to terms on a two-year deal with the Patriots, Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean reported on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Hawkins has caught 71 passes for 771 yards and one touchdown in five NFL seasons, all with Tennessee. The Titans released Hawkins on May 1.

Hawkins’ most productive season came in 2011, when he hauled in 47 passes for 470 yards and a touchdown in 16 games (two starts).

Hawkins (5-11, 194) joins a crowded depth chart in New England. With his addition, the Patriots now have 12 wide receivers in a revamped group led by ex-Rams slot receiver Danny Amendola. Also, the Patriots drafted a pair of receivers, selecting Marshall’s Aaron Dobson in Round Two and Texas Christian’s Josh Boyce in Round Four.

In addition to agreeing with Hawkins, the Pats signed veteran receivers Donald Jones (ex-Buffalo) and Michael Jenkins (ex-Minnesota) earlier in the offseason.

Strange signing from the Pats. Along with Jenkins.

Cards QB Brian Hoyer, who several teams like, was waived. Not sure he gets claimed with that 2nd round tender, but could see action as a UFA

Report: Urlacher considering Vikings, Broncos
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 14, 2013, 12:29 PM EDT

All has been quiet on the Brian Urlacher front in the months since the Bears announced that he wouldn’t be back, but he may have a couple of teams interested in his services.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported on Tuesday that Urlacher had interest from both the Vikings and the Broncos, and that he was leaning toward the Vikings.

The Sun-Times report came from gossip columnist Michael Sneed, who isn’t known for breaking NFL news, but we had previously heard that there was some contact between Urlacher and the Vikings, so seeing Urlacher in purple wouldn’t be a huge surprise.

At age 34, Urlacher isn’t the player he once was, but we’d expect him to catch on somewhere before the start of training camp.

Minn is a great fit...they don't really have a MLB right now.

The Broncos would be even better. They got by with Keith Brooking last year with little ill effects.

Yeah...Denver would be solid as well. I just kind of would like to see him stay within the division.

Dolphins pick up ex-Eagles WR Marvin McNutt

Posted by Mike Wilkening on May 15, 2013, 6:31 PM EDT

It did not take long for former Eagles wide receiver Marvin McNutt to find another NFL home. The Dolphins were awarded him on waivers Wednesday, according to the league’s transaction log.

McNutt (6-2, 216) was a 2012 sixth-round pick of the Eagles, who waived him on Tuesday. In Miami, McNutt will compete for a spot in a Miami receiving corps that is seemingly set at the top three spots (Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson). Rishard Matthews, Armon Binns and Jeff Fuller are among those vying for roles in the receiving corps beyond the top three wide receivers.

McNutt appeared in four games last season for the Eagles after being promoted from the practice squad on November 30. The Iowa product turns 24 in July.
