Cowboys' Marcus Martin surgery strains offensive line depth

By: C.C. Boorman | 8 minutes ago

In Thursday night’s exhibition opener against the 49ers, OG Marcus Martin exited with a big toe injury.

On Saturday morning, ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that Martin is headed for surgery.

Martin played 40 snaps in the preseason opener.

How the Cowboys elect to handle this case should be an interesting decision. Collins was a valuable member of the line and Dallas elected to ride it out giving him time to heal. Since Martin was locked in a battle for fringe interior depth roles versus Joe Looney and Kadeem Edwards, will the team elect to shut him down rather than hold a roster spot?

There’s a strong possibility Martin will be placed on injured reserve, with an injury settlement and release to follow. It’s tough to envision the Cowboys carrying him to the 53-man roster in order to have a backup eligible to return from IR later in the regular season.

As fat and dumpy as he looked against the 49ers, the blow shouldn't be too bad.

The only drawback is it may push the team to shove Chaz Green back to guard and give him new life.

And Green continues to play poorly, like vs the 49ers.
