Now, according to ESPN, the NFL has denied the Cowboys exemption request for Gregory to practice. If they had to file an exemption to get him to practice you know a suspension is looming, yet the team (supposedly) has not been informed of an additional failed test. This thing is very confusing right now.
If the Cowboys had to request an exemption then it sounds as though they are aware of some condition that exists that requires an exemption request.

Cowboys DE Randy Gregory denied special 2-week exemption to practice

FRISCO, Texas - The NFL has informed the Dallas Cowboys that defensive end Randy Gregory will not be allowed to practice Wednesday, erasing the optimism both had of the player's possible return to work before his suspension ended, according to sources.

Gregory's suspension runs through Dec. 18, the date of the Cowboys' Week 15 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the Cowboys hoped Gregory would receive a two-week roster exemption to practice. He is currently eligible to return to the active roster on Dec. 19.

Gregory was initially suspended the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy in the offseason. An additional 10-game penalty was announced on Sept. 29 for another violation. While there have been reports of Gregory committing another violation of the policy during the current suspension, sources say the Cowboys have not received any update from the NFL of a longer potential penalty.

When asked last week about Gregory's status, coach Jason Garrett said he had no information. At different times during the season owner and general manager Jerry Jones has remained supportive of Gregory, but has not commented further.

At the start of training camp the Cowboys placed Gregory on the reserve/did not report list when he checked himself into an out-of-state rehab facility. He has been around the team since the second week of the season, working out with the strength and conditioning coaches and taking part in meetings.

The Cowboys took a chance on Gregory last year when they picked him in the second round, knowing of his off-field issues while at Nebraska. He failed a drug test at the scouting combine that landed him in the substance-abuse program.

He had a productive training camp as a rookie and preseason but suffered a high ankle sprain in the season opener that forced him to miss the next four games. He did not record a sack in 12 games and was credited with 11 tackles, one tackle for loss and 16 quarterback pressures.

With just 23 sacks as a team in the first 12 games this season, the Cowboys are in need of pass-rushing help. Considering how much time Gregory missed since last season it might be misguided to expect him to be a major contributor but the Cowboys will take any help they can get.

The NFL is a disorganized fuck. So seriously they didn't inform the Cowboys until the day before that Gregory wouldn't be allowed to practice? What a joke. This should have been dealt with weaks ago. If they want to extend his suspension it should have been done back when he failed a test. To now deny him the ability to practice without giving him the new suspension just seems like an abuse of process.

That's what is so confusing to me. If he is due a further suspension just tell the fucking team so they can plan for it. I can guarantee the team doesn't know or why the hell would they even put in for the exemption? Makes no sense.

Like I said, the NFL couldn't address this until literally the afternoon before he is to start practicing? Seems to me like the league saw that the Cowboys were intending to have him start practicing tomorrow and then freaked out like they had no idea that was coming. The only reason I can see why they would deny Randy the ability to practice is because a new suspension is coming. Of course they haven't made such a ruling, so it's total bullshit.

Doesn't anyone know there is another definition to the word chronic other than attachment to weed. For instance some posters are a chronic pain in the ass. :art

That's what some people would call a Freudian slip... should have just used "habitual".

The NFL and Goddell are obviously completely full of shit but as far as Gregory himself, who cares?

Does anybody really believe this guy is going to be in any kind of shape to contribute on a Super Bowl run if by some miracle he was able to play?

The guy clearly doesn't give a single fuck, he's probably about as well conditioned for an NFL game as I am at this point.

Weed or no weed players are well aware that it's against league rules. It's really as simple as that no matter what your personal opinion on the matter is.

Now if he wants to smoke himself retarded then that's his choice. But at least be smart enough to wait after his playing days are over first and then buy some of that good shit.

All this over weed.
It doesn't matter what the substance is. A banned substance is a banned substance, especially as it pertains to a collective bargaining agreement. If the players wanted it removed, the NFLPA could fight for that. It didn't. So it doesn't matter what our opinions on the issue are because the players themselves obviously agree that it should be banned.

It would have been if I knew that chronic was tied to weed. It more or an uninformed happenstance. :art

I think that's a bit of a leap I wouldn't make. The players may not have made it a priority to change the rule but I seriously doubt that the majority of NFL players feel that weed should be a banned substance. It's probably just not worth it to the players to give up something significan to the owners in order to have the substance removed from the list.

We already know that far more NFL players smoke weed then ever get caught. Hell my understanding is that if you are even halfway smart about it you can smoke weed most of the year without any risk of being caught.

As a 15-20 snap pass rush specialist? Yes I think he could definitely help. Maybe a lot.

I agree, but I'm making the separate point that it is a bit myopic for the league to take top talents off the field over something so trivial.

Indeed.

Plus, I'm so desperate for any defensive help, especially in the front 7, that I actually am crossing my fingers and hoping he can help.

It's at least worth a look at this point, but that's all gonna be determined by whether he is in fact guilty of another violation or not.
