2nd-Round Pick Connor Williams Adds O-Line Depth; Full Analysis Here

FRISCO, Texas – A full breakdown of the Cowboys’ second-round draft pick (No. 50 overall) Friday night:

Name: Connor Williams

Position: Offensive Lineman

College: Texas

Height/Weight: 6-5/296

The Rundown: A three-year starter at left tackle for Texas, Williams was a consensus All-American as a sophomore in 2016, but a knee injury cost him seven games last season. Widely considered one of the best offensive line prospects in this year’s draft, Williams grew up just down the road from the Cowboys in nearby Coppell, Texas.

How He Fits In: Williams gives the Cowboys additional depth at offensive tackle or guard. The club added depth this spring by signing guard Marcus Martin and tackle Cameron Fleming, and starting right tackle La’el Collins has the flexibility to move inside. Williams’ position flex gives the line more versatility and adds more insurance at tackle behind Pro Bowler Tyron Smith, who missed several games last year with injuries.

Broaddus' Take:

Didn’t have the type of season many thought he would. Came into the campaign as one of the top tackles in the country but now faces questions about where he’ll fall in the first round.

He’s light at 296 pounds. Excellent foot athlete. Knows how to play with leverage. Always has his hands and feet in position. Not lazy at all with them.

Doesn’t appear rushed or hurried when blocking. Does a nice job getting into his man in the running game.

If he has an issue, there are snaps where you don’t always see him finish his guy off. At times, you will see his man play off the block and show up in the pile.

Have seen him play with more toughness in the past. Needs to regain that nasty side of him that we observed in 2016 when he was a better overall player.

Next Cowboys Pick: 3rd Round (81st overall)

This is from 2015 but I'm sure it's at least as true now...

Of the 159 players who have started at least four games as an offensive lineman since the start of the 2014 season, only 23 weigh less than 300 pounds and 39 weigh at least 320 pounds.

He's definitely gonna have to beef up

I'll bet very few of them were guards.

I admit I barely followed the draft this year, but this is one I'm dubious about, especially to start right away. As GK posted, sub 300 is very light these days for a G. Maybe he makes up for it with great footwork etc, but he won't be the mauler type we've had there with Leary and Collins.

I wouldn't be worried about his weight, it's not like he's 280. He is 6-5 and I'm sure he can easily add around 10 or so lbs in an NFL strength program.

The kid could easily add fat for weight. He's pretty flat-bellied. However, I'm not sure how eager he will be to do so. He was teased as a kid for being fat so he may have thing about gaining bad weight.

I could definitely see him adding ten pounds of muscle without much issue.

As lean as he is I'm sure he could put on 15 or so pounds of solid weight. No doubt he will be pretty much forced to do so. Most of today's DT's are 300-320
