Gavin Escobar signs; Travis Frederick only pick left

June, 21, 2013

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

Second-round tight end Gavin Escobar signed his rookie contract with the Cowboys, leaving first-round center Travis Frederick as the lone unsigned member of Dallas’ draft class.

Frederick’s deal will be done soon as the Cowboys complete their work from the back to the front of their draft class.

Escobar's four-year, $4.2 million deal includes $2.2 million in guaranteed money.

The Cowboys made Escobar the 47th overall pick despite the presence of perennial Pro Bowler Jason Witten, re-committing to using two tight ends as the base offense. The hope is that Escobar, unlike former Dallas second-rounders Anthony Fasano and Martellus Bennett, will be an impact player in the passing game for the Cowboys, particularly the red zone.

However, Escobar will have to beat out 2012 sixth-round pick James Hanna to get the majority of the work with Witten in two-tight end sets this season.
